Guillermo del Toro Says No Director's Cut For 'PACIFIC RIM'

Director Guillermo del Toro says there's not going to be a director's cut of "Pacific Rim" despite cutting a few scenes with the help of Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) and Alejandro Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman) during the editing process.

In a previous interview, "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he cut over 10 minutes from the film after sitting and going through his kaiju epic with directors Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro Iñárritu. However, del Toro insists that the film released in theaters is his preferred version in an interview with BleedingCool. "This is my director’s cut. There will not be an extended cut right now, we’re not planning on it, but there will be deleted scenes and they were deleted for a reason," said del Toro.

The director also revealed that he filmed three different ending for the film in a separate interview with BadAss Digest, including one that insinuated that the characters portrayed by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi would embark on a romantic relationship. But del Toro didn't think that was the right action to take for the jaeger partners. "When I was working on the movie we had three or four different versions of the relationship between Charlie and Rinko because I wanted to see if I could make a story about two people liking each other without having to end in a kiss," the director stated. He continued, "So when I shot the ending we shot three versions. I’ve never done this before, but instinctively I thought we should do three versions. We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues."

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."
