Wow. I'm loving these space movies coming out and that came out the past few years. All different in scope, but this looks fricking awesome. That cast though.

As much as this looks like an intriguing watch, the 'Alien life breaking free in an enclosed space' type of alien movies has been done to death and most of them follow the same theme and don't really differentiate from each other. I hope this movie brings something new to the genre as the cast is top notch.

You wanna shake shit up: have a space exploration film where NOTHING GOES WRONG and the crux of the film is the wonders of discovery without any danger such as psychological issues, a crew member getting lost and/or trapped, some vague mysterious alien running amok or making one big last attempt to get back to Earth as all hope is lost due to some ship malfunction.

@ComicsBornAndBred - I don't know, there has to be some form of, I don't wanna say "conflict", but something for the audience to care besides the scientific/poetic aspect of space exploration.
the psychological aspect is the way to go, I think, and not necessarily in a negative aspect (characer going crazy and sh*t), more of a character study to go along the exploration aspect.

@Spidey91 - I get that, but conflict such as "something will always go wrong" isnt the only way to induce care and investment from the audience imo.

You can grab the audience with the promise of an adventure about discovery, humans going above and beyond to SEEK something beyond themselves. And you can do this without compromising the character's psychological state or having the mission always be life and death, search and rescue, etc.

I think folks can be open to a poetic journey in space. One more about the hopefulness that comes with discovery. The PURE WONDER. Where the awe of space, the discovery of it all is what pulls you in.

@urnotaslave23 - Contact is less sci-fi blockbuster, more spiritual article of ideas. I don’t think I’ve seen a film before or since at least try and tackle the concepts pf science vs religion with as much honesty as Contact does.

God created Man in His image, so in whose image did he create an organism or life-form from another planet? The film really focuses on this qustion with an intelligence and sincerity that makes it anything but a run of the mill sci fi blockbuster. Jodie Foster's character has an epiphany as she witnesses the true beauty of the Universe. I would've expanded on this; the small steps towards enlightenment. Foster's Ellie is an individual whose idealism leads the whole planet towards a giant leap. More of that please. Discovery and enlightenment over sci fi hokum, thrills and action. No danger or great escape to survive, just seeking the beyond.

Every time I see a star-lit sky I think of this film. I love its sense of awe in the universe.

So this movie is like every other space film...





One of my favorite science-fiction tropes: the sad white astronaut. White people stay crying in space. Loneliness, exhaustion, being marooned, the fear of having an alien baby; worthy reasons to cry haha.
