JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Scores $112M Opening In China; Nearing $400M Worldwide Ahead Of U.S. Debut

We may still be about a week away from the debut of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but it already looks like Universal has a huge hit on their hands as the blockbuster nears $400 million worldwide.

After an earth-shattering $111.9 million opening weekend from China, Universal's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has totaled over $370 million worldwide. The J.A. Bayona-directed blockbuster is now swiftly approaching another major milestone as it's well on its way to topping the $400 million, possibly $450 million or $500 million, mark before the film's domestic launch on Thursday night.

Fallen Kingdom's China opening is currently the second-best of the year, behind only Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, and it is currently the fourth-best opening of all-time in the Middle Kingdom for a U.S. release, behind Universal's Fate of the Furious, Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, and Paramount's Transformers: The Last Knight. While it fell short of yesterday's bullish $125 million projection, it's expected to receive a major boost tomorrow, thanks to the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, which means it should rake in another $25M-$30M from China alone before the end of business tomorrow.

As for the film's long-awaited U.S. release, Fallen Kingdom is currently tracking for a potential $140 million to $150 million launch, which, if the numbers hold, would secure it the fourth-biggest debut of the year.

Meanwhile, Disney/Pixar's Incredibles 2 opened to a record-breaking $180 million domestic to win the weekend and it's international haul stands at approximately $231.5 million. Warner Bros.' Ocean's 8 finished second at the domestic box office with $19.5 million while newcomer Tag opened in third with a respectable $14.6 million.

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

Happy to see JW2 doing well, but for it being considered the "movie event of the summer" I thought it would have had the #1 opening in China.

Oh well, maybe it can still be #1 in the U.S.

What’s the consensus on this? I like Jurassic World but didn’t love it and the trailer for this looked VERY meh. Anyone seen it?

@Ha1frican - I just saw it with my daughter. She is 11 and loved every second of it. It was totally ok, but, for a movie about dinosaurs, it felt suprisingly small imo. Like it is a weekend at a country side house-movie, with some dinos in the basement. It feels like a build up movie to bigger things to come.

I keep hearing that if american movies open later than the us date release
they would be 'pirated' and it'd hurt their opening weekend gross overseas;

what about opening first overseas?
does it get 'pirated' in the usa too ??
