GODZILLA VS. KONG Director Adam Wingard Says "The Ghost Of Ghidorah" Was Controlling Mechagodzilla

Godzilla vs. Kong definitely prioritised action over story, and director Adam Wingard has now attempted to address at least a couple of plot holes, including where Charles Dance's villain vanished to...

Godzilla vs. Kong wasn't a movie that really spent much time worrying about the story, but with two iconic movie monsters going toe-to-toe, many fans who tuned into HBO Max to watch it didn't seem to care! During a recent Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything"), director Adam Wingard answered a number of questions and even explained some apparent plot holes.

At the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) was shown purchasing King Ghidorah's severed head, but he was nowhere to be found in Wingard's follow-up. That's a little strange when he should have been pivotal to the creation of Mechagodzilla, and the filmmaker's explanation wasn't overly satisfying.

"Godzilla stepped on him in between movies, unfortunately," Wingard said. "But seriously I love Charles Dance. One of my favorite actors."

So, he clearly didn't have a place for Jonah in Godzilla vs. Kong, but how does the director explain that big Mechagodzilla twist? While the mechanical Kaiju was supposed to be controlled by Ren Serizawa, one fan wondered whether the version that broke free was a completely new consciousness with a new memory or King Ghidorah in a new form looking to take its revenge.

"I think it's the ghost of Ghidorah possessing Mecha's A.I. creating a new personality," Wingard said, clearing that part of the movie up once and for all. The explanation does make sense, but it's a shame the idea wasn't better explored on screen.

What's your take on the filmmaker's comments?
