Though there's not very much to see at the moment, the official website for The Matrix: Resurrections has now launched. Is this a sign that the first trailer is on the way? Take a look...

After years of rumor and speculation, it was officially announced back in August of 2019 that a fourth Matrix movie was in development at Warner Bros. with Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote and co-directed the original trilogy with her sister Lilly, returning to helm.

Some intriguing set photos featuring returning stars Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) found their way online last year, but we still haven't seen anything in the way of official marketing for the movie. That may be about to change, however.

The first footage for The Matrix: Resurrections recently screened at CinemaCon, and now that the official website has launched, there's speculation that a trailer could be on the way. The site itself is pretty bare bones at the moment (it's just the green "digital rain" that's become synonymous with the franchise), but that code will likely be deciphered to reveal something from the sci-fi sequel fairly soon.

The footage descriptions certainly gave us a lot more to go on when it comes to the plot. We know that Neo, who now goes by Thomas, has no recollection of the events of the original trilogy, possibly suggesting that he's been plugged back in to The Matrix. Trinity also seems to be in the dark, and the pair don't recognize one another when they meet. The teaser also confirmed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be playing a younger version of Morpheus.

The Matrix: Resurrections also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff, and is currently set to hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22, 2021.

UPDATE: It looks like that trailer will be with us in two days!

Trailer incoming..

On another note, i only truly discovered Sense8 last week. That show was amazing! I really appreciate what they did there with the story telling and concepts. Another show that was ahead of it's time.

The name is so god awful that it doesn't give me much hope at all for the film. Reminds me of direct-to-video titles.

@Typhoon20 - no worse than the other 2 sequels sub titles

@Jaykay21 - reloaded isn't really used as a subtitle for direct to video movies all that often. Revelations a little more so but with the heavy religious allegories in the matrix it makes sense for the at the time last movie in the series to be named after the final book of the Bible.

Resurrection on the other hand is just lazy. Especially since rebooted is such a natural way to go.

@Origame - the third movie is called The Matrix Revolutions.

The Matrix Revelations is the Matrix sequel I have in my head.

STAY OUT OF MY HEAD.

I remember the marketing for the first movie and just seeing billboards and buses with “What is the Matrix?” everywhere and it actually had everyone asking “what is the matrix?”.

That movie, along with Fight Club, literally birthed movie viral marketing

Cautiously optimistic. The second Wachowski did not return.

Was hoping to find something hidden in the backend but there doesn't appear to be anything. You can download the 15 second looping video though lol

I am going to say something controversial yet brave: All three of the Matrix movies were damn good. I loved all three of them. I got them on a spiritual level. It was truly a hero's journey story. The first one was all about birth. The second one was all about life. The third one was all about death and the hope for resurrection. When you look at it like that, when you look at it as a whole story, it's a really good trilogy. And that scene where Morbius gives a speech to all the people underground and then there's a celebration afterwards? That drum music and the dancing in pure wild abandon and ecstasy? That scene stuck with me for a GOOD LONG TIME. Again, in spiritual terms that ecstatic spiritual dancing was something I connected with on a DEEP level and have applied it to part of my spiritual practice today. Anyway, because I saw all three movies as the spiritual equivalent to a hero's journey, a journey depicted in most spiritual texts around the world, I really connected with and LOVED the Matrix movies. I'm CAUTIOUSLY optimistic about Resurrection.

@BecauseICare - While I commend you for the disclaimer, the only brave thing you did was not bother to verify Morbius's name. I am also optimistic about the upcoming film. I tend to think we got the right Wachowski for the job.

@BecauseICare - I just re-watched all of them on HBO Max this past weekend, and I agree with everything you've said. I've come to appreciate the sequels as I've gotten older.

Some of the best things about Matrix Reloaded were about the illusion of choice, the various concepts of cause and effect, the previous Anomalies, the false prophecy, & the idea of Agent Smith being a rogue virus.

Matrix Revolutions then pushed the series lore even further by introducing us to Neo's connection to the source & being able to now control the machines, Smith's further takeover of the Matrix program, Zion's last stand, and most importantly, the final encounter that divided fans.

Neo letting Smith infect him so the Deus Ex Machina can trace & delete Smith from the Matrix was ingenious. It may have not been satisfying, but it does fulfill Neo's journey & completes the path of the One.

I don't understand what fans actually wanted out of the sequels. Did they just want to see Neo fly around exhibiting his powers? I don't think they could've done a better job.

First Matrix..one of my favourite movies of all time ...such an amazing classic. 2nd Matrix ...impressive at times but overall very disappointing. Third Matrix was awful !! Due to this I'm not very excited for number 4😔

I thought Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions were really good films. Not quite the classic as the original, but they were good sequels. Not half as bad as sci-fi fans make them out to be. Is it because it got too convoluted? Too much exposition? Not enough action? What's the main complaint?
