They are really Milking the Iron Giant for the marketing. Not that i'm complaining. I'll take all the Iron Giant I can get.

@Mrcool210 - And he wasn't even in the book.

Who gives a shit about Iron Giant? It came out in 1999 for pete's sake. Yes, I know the film has garnered good buzz, and may be successful. But the whole focus on the eighties was what was so delightful about the book.

@MarkV - Ultraman was supposed to be there like in the novel but Warner couldn't have the rights sadly...

@Mrcool210 - I'm jsut doing a little venting (and showing my age). Ultraman was my guy back in the day. Iron Giant is an excellent movie, but he replaced a legend in Ready Player One.

@MarkV - Hollywood knows Millennials are the most nostalgic generation? Why would they put things that were popular in the 80's when they can shamelessly target our childhood instead?

@CuddlyCereal - Honestly I really don't get this as a sort of knock on the movie. Even back on the book itself, it seems to me it was made perfectly clear to anyone going in -- "THIS is all what this story has and is about". Everyone knew pretty much what they were getting when going into it, if people were going to find so much fault for it I don't know why they bothered to begin with.

@CaptCoulson - So we can't criticize something for being shallow because we all already knew it was shallow going in? That sounds dumb.

It seems this movie will be a surprise and an enjoyable experience. Many seemed at first to have ruled it out as just being "popcorn flick" (nothing wrong with it either) so I am digging the feedback it is getting.

I hope they give the iron giant a cool character arc in this movie, just because I like the iron giant movie

I am currently reading the book and it is better than I thought! Spielberg is a master so every of his movie deserve a ticket

I'm still concerned that between 3 full trailers and multiple TV spots, there still hasn't been even one second of footage that would indicate ANY of the riddles that have to be deciphered or any of the steps to unlock each gate (ya know, the stuff that the whole friggin story is supposed to be about) are actually included in the film at all. They better not have made just one gigantic vehicle race (no matter how 'cool' it may look) be replacing all of that narratively.

I really liked the detective nature of the story, and exactly nothing in all the preview stuff shows that off.

MrDandy - 3/14/2018, 3:48 PM
@CaptCoulson - That's my exact worry as well. Most of the stuff in the trailers (apart from the real life scenes) seem to have 0 connection to book.
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 3/14/2018, 4:01 PM
@MrDandy - Yeah they seem to have changed a shit ton from the book. And I mean, I'm not naive, I wasn't expecting a literal adaptation, that's impossible. A thing like having it be clear from that start that Aeche is really a girl (plus, I'd only ever listened to the audiobook, so I always thought the character's name was simply "H" lol), that's something that's a lot easier to do just on the page than when it's a visual medium, so I don't really care about that. I'm not wild about Z and Artemis clearly meeting IRL way early in the movie and her being what's considered so universally very attractive, but oh well.
But then if it gets into stuff where they're significantly changing the actual plot, the narrative (I'm already assuming they won't be doing ANY of the thing where Wade goes undercover into IOI in the last third of the story at all), this is when I get nervous, that like they shouldn't even be still trying to call it Ready Player One.

I almost wish Spielberg just made a complete remake of The Iron Giant in live action. I have a bad feeling the big guy won't get enough screentime in Ready Player One.
