Star Wars actor David Prowse has sadly passed away at the age of 85.

The 6ft 6in former bodybuilder played Darth Vader in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. He was cast because of his imposing physique, but because his West Country accent was deemed unsuitable for the role, James Earl Jones was brought in to provide the voice of the iconic villain.

Prowse was arguably more famous in Britain for playing the Green Cross Code Man, becoming the face of British road safety for more than a decade and earning an MBE for his efforts.

Over the course of his 50-year career, he also appeared in the likes of Casino Royale (1967), Horror Of Frankenstein, The Saint, Space 1999, Doctor Who, and A Clockwork Orange.

"May the force be with him, always!" said his agent Thomas Bowington. "Though famous for playing many monsters - for myself, and all who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives."

Prowse's Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill also paid tribute to the late actor with the following Tweet.

Our thoughts go out to David Prowse's friends and family during this difficult time.

@Nightwing1015 - I saw him once, very briefly in Las Vegas. He was a very Big man and seemed very friendly.

He also was a personal trainer to Christopher Reeve and other actors who played Superman, which I wasn't aware of.

Rest in peace.

I'll never forget how he sounded as Darth Vader, but more importantly I'll never forget how he helped bring such an imposing villain to live.

@bkmeijer - How did he sound as Darth Vader?

@EskimoJ - not as menacing as James Earl Jones. I think you can find some of it on youtube

@EskimoJ - bkmeijer is correct. There are clips on Youtube Darth Vader scenes with his voic3 instead of James Earl Jones.

@EskimoJ - He sounded like a Englishman. He did all the lines on set to keep timing with the other actors, as well as provide the appropriate hand gestures etc.
James Earl Jones iconic voice was dubbed over him in post.

As he is for many, Vader is my favourite character in the Star Wars franchise. It definitely took a whole team of people to bring him to life, but Dave Prowse (along with James Earl Jones and George Lucas) really was at the top of that list.

And from what I've heard, he was a nice guy too, pretty sure an old friend of my parents who passed a while back once said that when he was a child he met Dave and, as he would do fairly regularly when he met kids in the UK due to his role as the Green Cross Man, he chatted with him and the other kids and picked him up with one hand (I think he said he sat him on his bicep or something). To think this guy was like 40 when he told my family that story just goes to show how important and long lasting those memories are to kids.

Plus, as I'm sure someone's already pointed out, he also trained Christopher Reeve when he took on the role of Superman! He certainly lived a life. RIP.

Not enough attention is often paid to the body language and subtle movements that brought Vader to life. He is a character whose face we never see, and yet he invokes so much menace and emotion at times. We have Prowse to thank for that.
