We had heard reports that Carrie Fisher was in stable condition following her heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 23, but the news has just come in from various sources that she has unfortunately passed away.

Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of Fisher’s daughter and fellow Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress, Billie Lourd:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Fisher was, of course, best known for playing Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy and last year's The Force Awakens, but she also appeared in the likes of The Blues Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe, Hannah and Her Sisters, and When Harry Met Sally.

Our thoughts go out to her friends and family at this time. Farewell, your highness, and may the force be with you.
