J.J. Abrams Shares His Thoughts On Disney's Planned STAR WARS Spin-Offs

Despite Disney confirming that a new Star Wars film will be released every year starting in 2015, Episode VII director J.J. Abrams seemingly suggests that the success of the next installment will allow all the other movies to be made.

Usually, a sequel to a film isn't guaranteed until the first movie is a success. In the case of Star Wars, however, Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to release a new film in that franchise every year beginning in 2015 with Episode VII (which was recently confirmed at CinemaCon). Despite this, J.J. Abrams had this to say when speaking with MTV News during the Star Trek Into Darkness press junket, suggesting that more films depends on the success of Episode VII. "We're focusing right now on this because this movie feels like this is the one that has to work for anything else to work." The director continued, saying, "There are discussions about what would happen later and how to make this thing and to tell story, you can't look at it in a binary way," Abrams said. "It's obviously part of something much greater. To talk about those off-shoot films, that's something have to talk about with Kathleen Kennedy." Of course, this doesn't mean that we won't see more Star Wars films following 2015, as Episode VII is nearly guaranteed to be a smash. Perhaps Abrams is referring to the fact that VII will lay a new foundation down for the upcoming movies, and that they need to be sure that it's a solid one. What do you think?
