SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Will Remain #1 This Weekend But Is That Enough To Turn Things Around?
Early box office projections are in for this weekend and while Solo: A Star Wars Story will remain at #1 for the second week in a row, is that going to be enough to turn the spinoff's fortunes around?
Solo: A Star Wars Story may have underperformed at the North American box office last weekend but it was still the best Memorial Day weekend since 2014 as a total of $227.6 million was earned in total by every release being shown. As of right now, analysts believe that the spinoff will remain at #1 with just over $30 million, a 60% drop from its disappointing $84.4 million three day debut last weekend.
Before you slam the divisive movie, though, bear in mind that the likes of X-Men: Days of Future Past and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End suffered a similar drop because Sunday's business was roughly equal to Saturday over the holiday period. Solo could have opened with twice as much but it still would have faced a 55% - 60% decline so this isn't a bad result for Disney...it's also not that great!
Despite that, the fact the movie will be lucky to make it to $250 million in North America by the time all is said and done is definitely a disappointment and Deadpool 2 is still nipping at its heels as that's expected to have a $21 million third weekend. Avengers: Infinity War, meanwhile, should pass the $2 billion mark any day now and we'll be sure to let you know what that happens! What are you seeing?
