He won't direct another Star Wars trilogy. At this moment it's all about damage control after the disastrous TLJ.

1. Disney's shareholders doesn't want this guy to destroy Star Wars any further. The Solo box office said it all. I'm 95% Bob Iger is on board with this, they are just acting like everything is cool at this point.
2. To keep the ship steady, for now, they let him play and plan his upcoming Star Wars trilogy. Doesn't cost them too much to keep him under the payroll.
3. A couple of months/half a year after TROS premieres they will throw this guy under the bus to get a fresh start.

He didn't destroy Star Wars. Let's not get too dramatic. He made a decent but flawed film and it was not nearly as bad as some of the other ones.

@Luke91 - TLJ grossed over billion dollars, was critical darling, loved by good chunk of the audience and had nothing to do with Solo underperforming. They would be idiots, if they cancelled his trilogy.

@FinnishDude -

Right? Why are people acting like Rian is a universally despised or bad director when ALL of his films have been a critical success (including 'Knives Out') and The Last Jedi was a success at the box office?

Just giving the guy a trilogy before the Last Jedi was released is one of the many missteps Kennedy has made since she took over Lucasfilm. Give him a movie to do what he wants and then decide whether or not to do sequels. I have a feeling this will bomb and leave us on a cliffhanger that they will wrap in other media.

Disney liked what he created and felt confident in the product. His latest film "Knives Out" is critically sitting at 100% praise so it's not like he's Uwe Boll or Ed Wood. He's a good director, and he knows what he's doing even if you don't like a film he made.

I have a feeling this will bomb and leave us on a cliffhanger that they will wrap in other media.

TheLast Jedi didn't bomb at the box office and got huge critical praise. There's no reason to think any other films from Rian will bomb when ALLM of his films have be a critical success.

You guys are talking like he has a string of failures behind him when it's the opposite.

So would this trilogy be to fill the 10 to 15ish year gap between Ep 9 and 10? Do people want this? I didn't really like any of the new characters he intoduced in 8, I don't really want a trilogy consisting of Rian Johnson characters.

@FinnishDude I didn't go watch Solo because of TLJ. So it other words - it had everything to do with the disastrous TLJ.

I’m still think they’re only letting him do one movie first (if it has a theatrical release), before letting him do a whole trilogy. The same goes for Benioff and Weiss. Unless they’re all doing trilogies for Disney+, then I can see them do whole trilogies at once
MarvelousMarty

He won't get this trilogy. No way. And rightly so. He didn't destroy Star wars but he did it no favors and took a huge dump on it.

I'm extremely hyped for Knives Out, and I'll be potential audience for most things Johnson does in the future. Except for maybe his Star Wars movies.

I really wish this trilogy was the only Star Wars he got to make. I was initially so excited to see him on the franchise, but that feeling didn't make it past December 2017.

Luke91 - lol.

Man I absolutely LOVE the amount of hate some people have. It's so bad that it makes you say completely ridiculous and nonsensical things.

1. The Last Jedi made over a billion dollars and was critically acclaimed.

2. A large portion of fans liked it. But the ones that didn't are the vocal people online constantly acting like it was hated by everyone, which isn't the case.

3. Solo didn't bomb because of TLJ. Solo was made by a completely different director and had nothing to do with the current trilogy. No one wanted, or asked for a Solo movie. Take that and combine it with the fact that they had to recast one of the top 3 most iconic Star Wars characters with some guy no one ever heard of and you have your formula for why it bombed.

4. If your logic is sound than TLJ would have destroyed Star Wars and Episode 9 will also bomb. But you know what? It won't. Episode 9 will make over a billion. No question.

@Luke91 "I didn't go watch Solo because of TLJ. So it other words - it had everything to do with the disastrous TLJ.

Well then that's kind of silly on your part. Why would you let a movie that was written, directed, and created by completely different people say you from watching another movie that had nothing to do with it?

Thats like someone saying they didn't go see Avengers Age of Ultron because they didn't like Thor: The Dark World. Lol. It's literally the same argument.

Also, people having a different opinion than you and liking a movie you didn't like doesn't make them blind fans. Again, just wait and see. If you're right and TLJ really did destroy Star Wars then that means Episode 9 and even The Mandalorian will bomb. But we both know that won't happen, don't we?

@OmegaDaGrodd -

This is our post-TLJ existence, it isn't going to change back. People who aren't fans of him and The Last Jedi are going to say as much and people who are will too — until the end of time. The only difference is that TheUnworthyThor isn't told every time they voice their appreciation of The Last Jedi to "move on because an amount of time has passed!" Liking and disliking TLJ are just two differing opinions and shouldn't be treated differently. Just look at his below comment, flip it to negative and tell me honestly that you wouldn't comment "quit whining" underneath it.

Nebula
Nebula - 9/10/2019, 11:57 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - You've singlehandedly conquered all negativity in the world. Of course, why did nobody see it before now? We should just mindlessly like anything and everything because positivity is inherently better than negativity. Right?
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 9/10/2019, 1:24 PM
@Nebula - You don’t need to conquer negativity in the world just within one’s self. Now of course that doesn’t mean a person needs to like every movie that they see but normally a person sees a movie they don’t like and is disappointed in the moment (if they went in with right mindset) and then lets it go and doesn’t think about it anymore. However going on article after article complaining about the same movie over and over again is not the same thing as simply disliking a movie. That’s holding on to unhealthy emotions. That’s a refusal to properly process those feelings and then move on to things that a person actually loves. Why continue to dwell on things you didn’t like, that you no longer like instead of embracing the infinite possibilities the future holds? There are so many great things in this world and more every day.

After the amazing The Last Jedi I need more Rian Johnson Star Wars and I need it sooner rather than later. A trilogy set in another part of the galaxy with all new characters excites me more than anything else in the future of Star Wars besides The Rise of Skywalker.

So your bunkmate shanks you in the back in the shower, admits to doing it/planning it out, and the warden says, "I don't think we need to do anything, let's just see if he stabs you a few more times. Flawed yes, but it was actually a pretty decent shank he put together, half the guys in the shower really thought it was an enjoyable shanking.

And even if you didn't think it was a great shank, I mean he's made all these other critically adored shanks, so yeah I'm just really surprised you're still pissed about this."

Seeing this face makes we want to punch it. As long as Disney doesn’t confirm that he still makes his goddamn SW, I won’t believe anything that idiot says. TLJ is absolute garbage. See how anyone who says that it’s a masterpiece only tells us to shut up, claiming that the critics loved it but can’t say what is actually good about that [frick]ing film. Of course it made a billion dollars because nobody believed that they could screw a Star Wars movie up! Me neither! Until we saw what they’d done —> not many had interest in Solo. Of course there is a connection and a few reasons more why Solo failed (except that it was the better SW movie actually what makes it kinda sad). Enough already, they [frick]ed up the SKYWALKER Saga, move on it’s done.

@TheUnworthyThor - Thank you for listing components which can belong to a movie. My "statement" was rhetorical anyway, no discussion about that shitfest of an abomination of a "movie" for me anymore Sir. 👋
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 9/10/2019, 7:46 AM
@boiling - Sure it was “rhetorical” because no matter how many people have said they loved the movie and no matter what aspects of the movie they loved for the part two years you didn’t want to hear it or read it so to you no one ever said what is actually good about the movie.
boiling
boiling - 9/10/2019, 9:58 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - How come you think to know what I heard/read wtf! You don’t know shit so stop assuming things you just know nothing about for [frick]s sake. I‘ve heard enough of this bullshit and I‘m really really tired of fighting over this "movie", it’s just not worth the time. No offense, all good, I like shit movies too but at least I can acknowledge that they are shit. Don’t need bought critics to tell me about a movies quality. Learn how to accept different pov and opinions.

If he wasn't writing then maybe I wouldn't hate the idea of this as much. I've seen three movies of his, all of which he wrote, and I hated them all. However, I liked his three Breaking Bad episodes and he only directed them, he didn't write them. I haven't seen Brick and, believe it or not, I feel no urge to given the pattern I just explained.
