On Friday, Disney and Lucasfilm debuted the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX (now officially titled The Rise of Skywalker). The teaser was met with wild enthusiasm not only from fans but from past and present franchise stars as well.

Among the more notable Star Wars names was Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker. Hamill, who has been openly critical of the new trilogy — specifically the handling and direction of his character — praised the film's intriguing title and helped tease the mystery of who it could possibly be referring to.

Hamill was not present on stage at Star Wars Celebration, but the actor will return in Episode IX - although, in what capacity remains to be seen.

Another big name to react was Rian Johnson, the oft-criticized writer and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. Johnson has come in for a lot backlash for the direction The Last Jedi went in, but it hasn't impacted his enjoyment of the franchise. His reaction to The Rise of Skywalker was pure joy.

Another intriguing response was from Ian McDiarmid. The Emperor Palpatine actor praised the power of the dark side, which makes sense if you've seen the trailer. If not, we won't spoil it here.

Aside from the cast, the reaction to The Rise of Skywalker has been largely positive from fans. Other stars who who didn't take to social media to express their excitement, but did so on stage during the panel at Star Wars Celebration include Daisy Ridley, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Oscar Isaac, and newcomer Naomi Ackie.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20, 2019.

Fans: I'm so glad Disney got rid of the EU. Palpatine surviving was stupid

Disney: Palpatine survived

Fans: I'm so excited

But seriously, does Palpatine surviving mean Anakin wasn't the chosen one? Because nobody actually brought balance to the force? Does that mean Rey is the chosen one?

@Nightwing1015 - well I mean Anakin caused there to be only two Jedi and two Sith.... seems like balance to me
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 4/13/2019, 6:22 AM
@Twenty23Three - I'm not sure that's actually what balance means. The Jedi seemed to want balance. But that doesn't mean they would all want to be killed.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 4/13/2019, 6:24 AM
@Nightwing1015 - The line from Yoda that goes something like ‘maybe a prophecy misread it was’ led me to believe that balance made literal balance but the Jedi had misinterpreted it as balance from their point of view. Very likely I am wrong but it’s a fun idea

@Soos - huh well there you go. Never got into any of the EU stuff so had no idea this was an actually plot point they went for
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 4/13/2019, 6:33 AM
@Soos - But even if it was literal balance....was that achieved in ROTJ? All the Sith died but there was still Luke. So no balance.

@Nightwing1015 - if you wanted, you could look at it as, the happy ending you got in the originals, with the context of the prequels isn’t that happy an ending after all. Leading to how things arnt happy in the new films.

@Nightwing1015 - well luke was more balanced with his philosophy by the end of rotj. Using tactics the sith would use, like force choking and allowing his anger to take control during battles. So yeah. There was balance there. It was only in the time between episodes 6 and 7 where he went full unbalanced and focused exclusively on the jedi was that made the necessity for more dark side users like snoke and kylo.

@Nightwing1015 - Balance wouldn't mean Sith gone entirely because that isn't balance. That's weighing everything to the light side, that's imbalance.

Where do people get the "this will retcon VIII" vibe from?
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 4/13/2019, 6:34 AM
@WakandanQueen - Well I think it's pretty clear why people are expecting it.

Because evidently JJ and Rian didn't see eye to eye on the plot. They didn't have the same ideas about where the story would go. So it's natural to assume that now JJ is back in charge, he will course correct towards his original idea.
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 4/13/2019, 6:37 AM
@WakandanQueen - It all starts with Rians (sorely misguided) thesis of ‘Let the past die’. Honestly some of the worst advice to give anyone...ever.

But it starts there. The disregard Rian had for certain elements than many fans took issue with.

- Anakin/Luke Lightsabre cracking in half.
* literally the first action moment of the teaser is J.J. panning down to show that Rey has FIXED the classic lightsaber.

-Kylo Ren (who was supposed to be Vader Obsessed) smashing his helmet and ditching it.
* Teaser quickly shows that the helmet is now repaired.

- TLJ message that anyone can be a hero and it’s not some lineage thing. Which is dumb because Han, Cherie, Lando, Wedge...etc were all heroes and they didn’t come from anywhere special.
* Rise of Skywalker. It’s a story of a FAMILY. Not a bunch of nobodies. *

- Finally...let the past die.
* Biggest reaction and shock was pulling from the past. Bringing the Prequel and Original Trilogy Villain Back form the Past.*

So while not retconning it narratively. It looks like EP 9 is going to course correct star wars back to its proper place philosophically and spiritually.

HeavyMetal4Life - 4/13/2019, 6:48 AM
@WakandanQueen - they see what that they want to see. Trailer feels like a continuation of what Rian began, in every way, and looks and feels nothing like The Force Awakens. But hey, quick, gotta make a dig at The Last Jedi and once again cry about that film!!
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 4/13/2019, 6:50 AM
@WakandanQueen -

1. People don't know what "retconned" means

2. People don't actually know or remember what happened in TLJ, and don't seem to know what TLJ was even saying so they don't even know where the contradictions begin/end

3. People who say this stuff really *wanted* JJ to retconned TLJ for a sense of vindication and when the trailer only lived up to their expectations in the slightest of ways (Kylos helmet being repaired.... and that's about it) they kinda just had to keep talking like it removed TLJ from existence even though it clearly didn't, which is why you have people calling the trailer a rebuke of Johnson when the last line is literally written by Rian Johnson

I expect JJ to bring back a few of the things he set up that Rian disregarded (Knights of Ren, helmets, maybe some Finn/Rey stuff) but I can already tell people are going to hate JJ specifically because he's not going to retconned a bunch of stuff, which is why people need to be VERY careful about buying into that title, there's no way Mr Mystery box was giving you things that directly from the jump

@IronGenesis - I want to preface this by saying I'm not a big star wars guy, I watch and enjoy the films, but don't have a "personal connection" to them. This might be a factor into me having a more positive response to ep 8 than others.

About your point on "let the past die", if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the whole point of ep 8 to actually not let the past die? Rey was given the option to either leave it all behind, or honor it and she chose to honor it.
Origame
Origame - 4/13/2019, 6:58 AM
@IronGenesis - tlj wasnt about "letting the past die". If it was, it wouldnt have been spoken only by the villain of the movie. The message was learning from your failures. This included not just the failures of the new characters, but also the failures of the originals. The jedi had a flawed philosophy that ultimately created 2 powerful villains, but still had a purpose and was still necessary. Thats why luke talked about the jedi still living with rey. She's going to allow the ways of the jedi to improve.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 4/13/2019, 7:01 AM
@AbidNaga - People who read 'let the past die' as the sole theme of TLJ - when only the two morally broken characters on opposite sides of the spectrum espouse that philosophy - seemed to have completely missed the part where Yoda corrected that take by noting "We are what they grow beyond" and Luke later notes "No one's ever really gone" as the film clearly shows Rey still has the Jedi text and can start things anew the right way

In essence, people are extremely foolish and happily miss the Forrest for the trees at the earliest opportunity. The Last Jedi isn't about killing the past, it is about learning and growing from it
