If you've ever wondered what goes into the production of a
Star Wars film, you'll definitely want to check out
The Director And The Jedi, a new documentary that chronicles the making of
The Last Jedi. Even better, the documentary will be making its premiere at the upcoming South by Southwest Film Festival on March 12th.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuted last month and, despite rave reviews, has been one of the most divisive films in the franchise among fans. While writer/director Rian Johnson and the cast, including Mark Hamill, have been pretty open in sharing their thoughts on the film since its release, this documentary should give us an even more in-depth look at the production process and perhaps a better understanding behind some of the decisions made.
Responding to the announcement, Johnson seemed pretty ecstatic about the documentary's debut.
Hamill, who didn't necessarily agree with all of the decisions regarding his character Luke Skywalker in the movie, also praised the documentary as "one of the best" in terms of offering an inside look at the moviemaking process.
The
synopsis for the documentary reads:
An intimate documentary delving into Rian Johnson's process as he comes in as a director new to the Star Wars universe. A fan since childhood, he sets out to make the most powerful Star Wars movie he can. Navigating the mammoth production, the scale of which he’s never directed before, we meet his cast and crew, see their individual challenges in bringing the film together, say goodbye to Carrie Fisher, and explore the significance of Rian’s more surprising decisions.
The documentary gives you a view of what it really was like to make "The Last Jedi". As the team strive to do their best, what shines through is their passion and how memorable an experience it is for Rian as director.
For those who won't be able to attend the screening of the documentary at SXSW, it will appear on The Last Jedi Blu-Ray, along with deleted scenes, commentaries, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases on Digital HD March 13th and on Blu-ray and DVD March 27th.
