TRON 3 Might Not Be "Totally Dead" According To Star Garrett Hedlund

Fans of the Tron franchise were disappointed to learn that Disney had scrapped plans to go ahead with a third entry into the cult sci-fi series for the time being. However, Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund may have just offered them a small glimmer of hope...

While promoting his role in Joe Wright's Pan to Comicbook.com, Troy and Inside Llewyn Davis actor Garrett Hedlund weighed in on Disney's decision to halt production on Tron 3. Hedlund had a starring role in Joseph Kosinski's Tron: Legacy, which split audiences down the middle back in 2010. Despite this, many fans have expressed a desire to see where the franchise can go from here, and Hedlund may have just offered them a glimmer of hope.

"
I haven’t been told it’s totally dead," the actor claimed. "Ever since we did Legacy, we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting. Disney needed to have the right story to go forward." He also remarked on the sequel's early story treatments. "I think it was going to introduce some things that were as exciting as Legacy was and then some, though."

However, it took 28 years for the first sequel to get made, and he's aware history could end up repeating itself. "Who knows, maybe it’ll be like Legacy was to the first Tron, it’ll be 30 years, and I’ll have my young Flynn CGI face, who knows?" he joked. "But they could do it anytime from now, and I would of course jump back in. Something like that could be quite fun, though!"

Despite Hedlund's enthusiam, it's likely we'll be waiting a little while for Tron 3 to roll around. In the meantime though, you can catch him in Pan, which hits theatres October 9.
