Predators DID not damage the franchise. it was the BESTSINCETHEOG predator and a very solid action-survival film.

@Jeight8 - May not be an especially great movie, but I thought it was a pretty darn fun ride.

@Jeight8 - Agreed! It was exactly where the story should have gone after P1 & P2. Forget AVP movies. Predators took us off world and showed more of how the Predators functioned & trained. I don't get the hate for it.

@Jeight8

This, a million of times this. Predators was a decent entry to the franchise and the second best movie overall.

I will still take my let-it-go-Nan to see it (hoping she'll let a little air out of her Ileostomy bag as she did during a packed audience for Frozen).

Not sure there is much going for this franchise beyond the very-zeigeisty hypermasculinity of the original. If Black couldn't bring the magic back, then it's probably time to put 'er to pasture. Relegate it to easter eggs in more interesting films and the occasional Family Guy reference.

The trailers didn't really convince me otherwise. It's bad? What a shocker.. Let's all just wait for the real horror comeback next month with Halloween!

@Tcb97 - If The Nun turns out to be actually good we would have two horror films in each month of the Fall.

@SonOfAGif - I saw the Nun Wednesday. It was okay. If you're looking for jump scares and a bit of humor, go for the crowd-pleasing. If you'd like any kind of backstory about who or why the Nun is, you'll probably be disappointed.

The original predator wasn't favored by critics back then. I'll judge it for myself.

Shane Black should have gone retro-prequel with a 70s Vietnam Nam Predator

@ElJefe - That'd be essentially a remake of the first one and Predator is just one of those movies I don't think needs remaking. It's perfect for what it is.

I think Alien and Predator and Terminator were all just one-trick-ponies, ultimately. The idea that humans could be the prey of a natural predator (in the case of Alien) or a hunter (in the case of Predator) or a machine (in the case of Terminator) were somewhat jarring premises when put into the mainstream science-fiction cinema lens.

But without that first-brush novelty, you have to put meat on the bones and actually world-build, and (with the exception of James Cameron, because James Cameron is always the exception), there's not actually a lot of interesting places you can take these creatures.

@Spock0Clock - wouldn’t be a remake, but definitely a prequel

@ElJefe - They should have went for a Predator 3 type of film. Have a Predator stalk soldiers in Syria and cause the Syrian terrorists to temporarily unite with American soldiers to combat the Predator.

Meanwhile the United States wants the Predator captured. Successfully they do so.

Then for Predator 4 we learn the US has created deadly weapons of war with Predator technology and create their own Predator with spliced DNA and the Beta-Predator escapes and murders everyone in it's path.

@Spock0Clock - I just think sometimes the world-building and expansion of the idea isn’t necessary - if it’s a simple concept keep the premise simple and just add a new twist that keeps the story fresh. For example, in ‘Nam there could have been a lot of confusion on both sides about the enemy slaughtering soldiers and leaving remains behind. I think it would have been a good time to “go back to formula” (insert Willem Dafoe gif here)

@Spock0Clock - I think a Tarzan type of story would work well in a Predator film.

Set it on the Predator homeworld during a massive clan war and the protagonist is a young man raised from a baby to an adult by the clan the original Predator belonged to after the ship he was on crashed on their planet. He was the only survivor. He can speak their language and prolonged exposure to the planets air / gravity makes him almost as agile / strong as his adopted family.

The other clan is more bloodthirsty and doesn't really kill for sport, it kills for fun and dominance. Another ship that was responding to a distress call from the original ship is badly damaged when it lands. One of the Colonial Marines onboard is the young man's father and has been looking for him for the past twenty years.

The young man then has to choose between helping his biological father and humans escape the planet or help his adoptive father (a Predator) stop the bloodthirsty clan of Predators from taking over.

Outlaw King also debuted yesterday at TIFF and it's not getting good reviews either... :/

By the way, saw The Nun last night. Disappointing. Very mediocre.
