Joseph Kosinski Comments On "Flattering" STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Director Rumors

TRON: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski has been among the many directors linked to the job of helming the next Star Wars movie. While it sounds like he won't do it, he has high hopes for the film and whoever is chosen to direct.

While not actually being rumored for the highly coveted gig, director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy, Oblivion) was among the many who have been linked to the job of helming Star Wars: Episode VII. The idea does make a lot of sense. Not only does Kosinski have a good relationship with Disney (who are planning on releasing Episode VII with LucasFilm in 2015), he's also well experienced with sci-fi films with just his first two films. In fact, he was one of my personal picks for the job if other rumored candidates like Matthew Vaughn or Jon Favreau pass on it. However, with TRON 3 reportedly on the fast-track at Disney and Kosinski attached to direct, it's unlikely we'll see his take on a Star Wars movie anytime soon. Speaking with MTV News, Kosinski addresses the possibility of his directing Star Wars: Episode VII.

"I have not, I have not [spoken with LucasFilm]," he said. "For me, I feel like, between 'Tron' and 'Oblivion,' I've gotten to fulfill my 'Star Wars' fantasies, in a way. It's flattering of you to mention, but like everyone else, I'm interested to see where they take it. I actually know the writer [Michael Arndt] on it very well; he's a fantastic writer, and I think he's perfect for the job, so I'm sure it will be a great story, and I can't wait to see what they do with it."

Even with Kosinski not directing, the helmer has high hopes for the highly anticipated sequel and offers his advice to whoever does direct. "It is tough. I mean, whoever does it hopefully will have the freedom to put their own stamp on it and present a unique vision. Hopefully it will look and be something that no one's expecting as the first ones were when they came out in the late '70s. It's a tricky challenge, but they've got really good people on it, so I'm sure they'll figure something out." Kosinski's next film, Oblivion, is set to hit theaters April 19th, 2013. TRON 3 may be his next project, and a 2014 production start date has been suggested.
