Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu covers the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and while he's not in-character as the Master of Martial Arts, the mag has also debuted five new official images from the upcoming MCU adventure.

Two of the stills feature the titular hero alongside his friends Katy (Awkwafina) and Jon Jon (Ronny Chieng), and it looks like he'll be going by "Shaun" while living and working in the U.S. Another image shows a young Shang-Chi being trained by his father Wenwu (Tony Leung), and we also have new looks at the mysterious Xialing (Meng'er Zhang) and the villainous Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu).

Liu also spoke to the trade about playing an Asian American hero who happens to be adept at martial arts in the current climate.

"There are two paradigms that are completely at odds with each other," he says. "One being, as a progressive Asian American man, I've always wanted to shatter barriers and expectations of what Asian men are and be very aware of the boxes that we're put into — martial artists, sidekicks, exotic, or Orientalist. And then the other paradigm is, like, kung fu is objectively super f---ing cool. There is a reason why kung fu caught fire and the world became obsessed with it, because it's incredible to watch."

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also stars Michelle Yeoh and Fala Chen. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Callahan and Andrew Lanham, the movie is set to be released theatrically on September 3rd, 2021.

Good, his names Shaun. Now we know that once trouble goes down he and his flatmates can head over to the pub and wait for this whole thing to blow over.

@Origame - Well that is until the Dead show up. Then they had better hope for some Hot Fuzz or it'll be The World's End. I'll see myself out now.

Well if nothing else it should explore a corner of the MCU that we haven't seen yet. After the Abomination/Wong surprise I curious what other surprises they have in store for us. Also, being married to a Chinese woman, I'm curious as to how much they will dig into actual Chinese folklore and how accurate it will be (although I doubt that she will take much notice one way or the other - I'm pretty sure that I know more about Chinese folklore than she does, and I'm a born and bred American white guy :p).

@StSteven - we did see Foo Dogs come to life in the trailer

Interested in if we will see any other mythological ancient Chinese beasts

@BlackBeltJones - I'll also be curious to see if they do bring in some of the more mythological aspects of Chinese folklore whether they will treat them as though they are mainstream MCU content or part of some hidden temple or something tucked away in the mountains that no one knows about (which is kinda what we see in the trailers). Like, we know that there is a water dragon so is it going to be that moving forward the MCU just accepts that there are dragons (which after superheros, aliens, etc. wouldn't be much of a stretch), or is this stuff going to just stay within the context of the Shang-chi world? Just curious if we'll ever see Spidey webbing up a dragon like one of those big camel things from that really old movie "The Empire Strikes Back" ;)

I’m incredibly excited to learn more about the title character himself. Unfamiliar with the comics background, but I love how the trailers haven’t revealed too much about Shang-Chi’s personality or relationship with his family yet.

Have no idea what to expect, which is good for an origin film.

I always thought that this movie should be in Chinese. I mean, there should use their mother tongue. Chinese with Chinese, they speak mandarin (if they come from somewhere let's say, hong kong or Malaysia, they should speak Cantonese). I think this is one of the major problems with the mainland Chinese accepting this movie as I can say, becoming their first Chinese superhero (I guess? well I think they have already had their own superheroes but just didn't publish to the western, yet.) other than their complaint about the main cast/the hero didn't have some charismatic handsome face whatever their complaint about. Just let them speak Chinese, I guess it will be ok.

He makes a good point. And in my opinion you can't be progressive by atleast acknowledging what came before. And if that is kung fu, he's right thats [frick]ing cool anyway
