In a new interview, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton talks about casting Simu Liu as the titular hero and whether another MCU hero will make a cameo appearance...

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios revealed that Simu Liu will be taking on the title role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The actor has since expressed his excitement to play the character in numerous interviews, and now director Destin Daniel Cretton has talked about what makes the Kim's Convenience star the right choice to play the Master of Kung-Fu.

"He’s awesome," the filmmaker says in the video below. "There’s just an undefined thing that when somebody pops, everybody’s in agreement, and they’re just really excited."

After detailing what he hopes to bring to the project, Cretton was asked about the possibility of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel making an appearance in Shang-Chi. That may sound random, but they have actually worked together on a number of occasions, including Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and Just Mercy (which is set to be released this winter).

"I mean, I think there's always room for Brie. But I don't know, we'll see," he teased.

USAgent Is Coming To The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

USAgent

There's been a lot of speculation that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will feature the government attempting to appoint their own new Captain America (who isn't Sam Wilson), and that was pretty much confirmed over the weekend when we learned that Wyatt Russell will be playing John Walker, a character better known to comic book fans as USAgent.

In other casting news, Emily VanCamp's will return as Sharon Carter, something else which points to the government playing a key role in however this adventure for Sam and Bucky will play out.

Some Familiar Names Board WandaVision

Kat-D

WandaVision hasn't started shooting yet, but a sizzle reel was shown to give fans an idea what to expect from the Disney+ series. Featuring a mixture of clips from the Dick Van Dyke Show and some of The Vision and Scarlet Witch's most memorable MCU moments, it will reportedly be part suburban sitcom and part action epic.

Surprisingly, Kat Dennings will make her return as Darcy Lewis from the Thor franchise, and, honestly, it's hard to imagine who she will fit in. Ant-Man and The Wasp's Randall Park will also be back as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, while Kathryn Hahn has been cast to play a mysterious neighbour to the superpowered couple.

This one is really shaping up to be something special.

Barry Keoghan And Gemma Chan Join The Cast Of Eternals

Gemma-Chan

The cast of Eternals was already massive, and it got even bigger at D23 when Barry Keoghan and Gemma Chan were added to the team's roster. Keoghan is playing Druig, a powerful member of this group who has frequently butted heads with his fellow Eternals over the years.

As for Chan, she'll be suiting up as Sersi, a role we originally thought would be filled by Angelina Jolie. There's no word on how Marvel Studios intends to explain why she looks so similar to Captain Marvel's Minn-Erva, but her being covered in blue make-up in that movie will probably mean that most fans won't even realise. Sersi is actually one of the mightiest Eternals.

Phase 4 Gets Even More Epic

She-Hulk

We didn't really get any new movie announcements at D23, but Marvel Studios did reveal that three more TV shows are coming to Disney+ in 2022. The first is Ms. Marvel, a series which will revolve around Muslim superhero Kamala Khan; Kevin Feige also confirmed that there are plans to bring that character to the big screen.

The second series is Moon Knight, and fans have been anxious to see the unhinged Marc Spector's vigilante story play out on the streets of the MCU for a long time now. Finally, it was revealed that The Hulk's cousin She-Hulk is also coming to the small screen, and that's bound to be a big budget project given how much money will be needed to bring her to life in live-action.

Kevin Feige And Tom Holland Address Spider-Man's Future

FFH3

Heading into D23, we knew it was going to be an interesting weekend for Marvel Studios. While none of us were expecting Kevin Feige to hit the stage and announce the next Spider-Man movie (set in the MCU), it was clear that something would have to be said about the situation.

Well, both he and star Tom Holland did comment on the matter, and it now definitely sounds like the relationship between Disney and Sony Pictures has reached its end. The actor said he will continue playing the wall-crawler, but noted that the hero's future on screen will now be "very different."

As for the Marvel Studios boss, he said "It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever" and noted that he was "thankful" that they "told the story we wanted to tell." However, it's impossible to imagine he's happy with things ending the way they have.

What If? Features Marvel Zombies And More

Zombies

Fans in attendance for the Disney+ D23 panel were treated to a first look at footage from What If? and it's reportedly quite similar to the Disney Channel's Star Wars: Resistance TV series. Among the snippets shown were shots of The Winter Soldier battling a zombie version of Captain America, T'Challa suited up as Star-Lord, and a skinny Steve Rogers decked out in a massive Iron Man suit.

By far the biggest talking point, however, was our first look at Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter as Captain Carter/Captain Britain. This was actually the first episode of What If? to be revealed by Marvel Studios, so don't be surprised if much of the show's marketing campaign revolves around this alternate universe version of the fan-favourite character and her brand new persona.

Black Widow's New Costumes

We were treated to a lot of great concept art over the weekend, including a new WandaVision poster teasing the Scarlet Witch's comic accurate costume, another look at Eternals' Celestials, and the suits that'll be worn by The Falcon and Bucky in their upcoming Disney+ series.

Something that really got fans talking, though, is the Black Widow concept art and poster which reveals that she'll don a number of new suits in her solo movie (including one that's completely white). The poster also featured a new shot of Taskmaster, while David Harbour's suited up Red Guardian definitely looks like Russia's own version of Captain America!

Kit Harington Is The MCU's Black Knight

BK

Barry Keoghan and Gemma Chan weren't the only additions made to Eternals on Saturday. Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will be suiting up as Black Knight, a member of The Avengers in the comic books and someone who we've heard is coming to the MCU for quite some time now.

It sounds like much of the plot will revolve around the love story between Sersi and the Black Knight, and time will tell whether this is a one-time deal for Harington or if Marvel Studios plans to bring him into the present day somehow (possibly via time-travel and the Quantum Realm). Either way, this is a great casting addition, even if some fans are disappointed he's not the new Wolverine!

Loki Lands A Director

Loki213

We didn't learn a whole lot more about Loki over the weekend aside from the fact that it will run for six episodes. It's also going to follow the villainous version of Loki who escaped during Avengers: Endgame, and fans are already speculating wildly about how he'll factor into Thor: Love and Thunder.

Something that was actually confirmed, though, is the fact that all six instalments of Loki will be directed by Sex Education helmer Kate Herron. Time will tell what she ultimately brings to the table.

Black Panther II Gets A Release Date

Panther-2

Marvel Studios decided against revealing a long list of the new movies coming to theaters in 2022, but we do now know at least one of them, and it's a biggie!

Taking the spot normally reserved for Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Black Panther II (the subtitle simply hasn't been chosen yet) will claw its way into theaters on May 6th, 2022. As expected, Ryan Coogler will be directing and Chadwick Boseman is obviously going to reprise his role as T'Challa. Beyond that, we know very little about what to expect.

Continue reading below for a recap of Phase 4
reveals from last month's San Diego Comic-Con!
Image

During the panel, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that every movie released up until now is part of "The Infinity Saga." Here, we see the brand new logo for those first three phases.

Image

This is a fairly simple logo but one which may match the tone. Kevin Feige said it will be 100% Jack Kirby-inspired so it's a little surprising that there's not more evidence of that in this title.

Image

Sadly, we'll never get to see Iron Man battle the real Mandarin but he will be the lead villain of this movie. In case the title didn't make it clear, that logo emphasises those ten (magic?) rings too.

Image

The Doctor Strange logo has received something of an overhaul but it's interesting to see how the subtitle is even bigger. Scarlet Witch will appear in the sequel so the red may be a homage to her.

Image

Just like Thor: Ragnarok had a very unique logo, so too does Thor: Love and Thunder. That's a title which could have a number of meanings, particularly now we know Valkyrie is indeed gay.

Image

Honestly, what else did you expect? This is to the point and exactly what you would expect from a gritty movie featuring the fan-favourite Avenger. It's good to see her logo front and centre too.

Image

The biggest surprise at Comic-Con was, of course, the fact that Blade is returning to the big screen. This logo perfectly emcompasses the fact that the Vampire Hunter operates both night and day.

Image

This may be titled The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but the presence of Captain America's shield should tell you all you need to know; Sam Wilson is going to take on that persona on Disney+!

Image

This is still a pretty weird title but it's easy to see the 50s inspiration here. It's been said on a number of occasions that the show will have a retro aesthetic as we head into the MCU's suburbs.

Image

This title treatment is very different and it's hard to say what, if anything, it tells us about the series. What we do know, though, is that it will revolve around the God of Mischief from 2012.

Image

This is simple but awesome and if you look closely, you may notice that we get what could be our first look at the show's animation style. Is that the Red Skull wearing Captain America's suit?

Image

The logo for Hawkeye is obviously inspired by Matt Fraction's run and that makes sense, especially as the comic book series revolved around Clint Barton training and working with Kate Bishop.
Image

And here it is, Marvel's Phase 4 slate. However, this probably isn't the entire slate because these movies and TV shows are only spread out over two years and that would be a very short Phase!

It just perplexes me that this movie's being made. Even stan lee didn't care about this property (when he tried to make it he immediately gave up when bruce lee turned it down). Outside of diversity and them needing some place to put a comic accurate mandarin, this is just so random. Remember, to all the comic fans waiting for the mcu versions of your favorite characters, they think shang chi is a bigger priority.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 9/8/2019, 4:37 AM
@Origame - Marvel Studios bringing "random" characters to the big screen didn't stop them from creating the biggest franchise in cinema history.
Havenless
Havenless - 9/8/2019, 5:19 AM
@Origame - Then you don’t follow Marvel Comics. Shang Chi is phenomenal and IS one of many people’s favorite characters.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/8/2019, 6:57 AM
@Origame - The entire MCU was built on non-A-listers. All the while outperforming the studios that had their A-list properties. I'm not sure how this is so perplexing...
Origame
Origame - 9/8/2019, 4:44 AM
@WakandaQueen they weren't being random. They were going based on the popularity of the characters they had the rights to. Please point me to a list of popular marvel characters with shang chi above characters not featured in a movie already.
deepee3
deepee3 - 9/8/2019, 4:52 AM
When Marvel Studios began their most popular characters belonged to Fox, Sony and Universal. Making Iron Man (at the time) was one of the few options they had.

And by the looks of things they seem to know what they’re doing.

Origame - 9/8/2019, 5:52 AM
@Havenless please tell me what number on this list shang chi shows up in...https://m.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-marvel-comics-superheroes

I can provide more lists where people have voted and shang chi never even ends up on. But please, if this isn't enough then how about show me all the shang chi fans who have been begging for this movie to come out. Again, stan lee gave up on this movie pretty much right when bruce lee turned it down.

Like 3 weeks after Comic Con my wife got hooked on Kim's Convenience and while I don't know what tone/style/personality they're taking with Shang Chi, I definitely think Simu's got the range for the Marvel 'house' style and more

Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/8/2019, 12:34 PM
@OmegaDaGrodd - I've been chugging through Kim's Convenience, too. It's by far the most bearable modern variation of domestic sitcom I've seen in a long time. Not sure what Liu's limits are as an actor, but he's damn charming.

Depending on just how well this movie does, Simu Liu could blow up after it similarly to Chris Hemsworth and Henry Golding. Dude has so much charisma.

I know nothing about Shang Chi but I'm excited for this. It sounds different and cool and the people involved have good energy.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 9/8/2019, 7:46 AM
I actually think it's a benefit that Shang Chi isn't the most popular hero in marvel history. When you have people making a film just because they feel like they have to, you get the Fox-Men. But when a relatively unknown character gets chosen, you know that somebody somewhere is passionate about that character. And sees potential for greatness.

@Tonic24k and those characters were still the best that marvel could make. I mean, they had the hulk dude.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/8/2019, 11:19 AM
@Origame - They only kinda had the Hulk. And yeah, Shang-Chi is most likely going to be a badass martial arts movie. Something the MCU doesn't have yet. Again, not very perplexing. Marvel Studios have BEEN making gold with less popular properties.
FearTheLiving
FearTheLiving - 9/8/2019, 9:42 AM
Why are people asking about Brie in a Shang-Chi movie...? That's a completely different vibe and power level to introduce into a titular character's first movie.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/8/2019, 12:36 PM
@FearTheLiving - Because she has worked with Shang-Chi's director in a lot of movies. That is sometimes how these things go (like Larson and Sam Jackson being attached at the hip lately).

Origame
Origame - 9/8/2019, 2:58 PM
@Tonic24k all their characters have had some form of fan fare behind them. Where are these shang chi fans?

And you can get a great martial arts film by adapting iron fist or daredevil, both of which would be very desireable after the loss of the netflix deal. But they won't do that because those are white males, and looking at the line up, those aren't the heroes they want to adapt anymore.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/9/2019, 5:48 AM
@Origame - Oh no! Woe is the white male! Lol.

Firstly, just because you’re not a Shang-Chi fan does it mean they don’t exist. It also doesn’t mean that just because it’s obscure the stories aren’t worth adapting. Prior to James Gunn’s work, how popular was Guardians of the Galaxy?? Exactly. How many people you know back in the day bragging about their sweet Ant-Man comic book collection? Exactly. Shang-Chi isn’t random, it’s actually quite calculated. Disney and Marvel Studios are making bold moves for the sake of diversity, representation, and culture. All positive things and yet there are always some rigid, narrow-minded folks out there threatened by it.

Secondly, Iron Fist and Daredevil are not ready for their true MCU debut. But we did get a good taste of those characters from their Netflix incarnations. However, since those shows are now over, Marvel Studios isn’t going to just adapt them to the big screen right away. Just like the Fox properties, you have to let them rest a bit before reintroducing them in a different way.

There are plenty people stoked about this Shang-Chi movie. Including my white male self.
KnifeWasTooSlow

Wasn't this film supposed to be a 70's period piece? The origin of the Ten Rings Organization?
Origame
Origame - 9/9/2019, 9:47 AM
@Tonic24k dude, if diversity is the only thing you can think of for why a movie should be made, then it shouldn't be made. If you can't prove these fans exist, then they don't.

And yeah. Woe is the white man. The one group that can be beaten and tortured while his attackers call out him for being in that group and people will still insist it's not a hate crime. Im part of the group that its acceptable to discriminate against. So don't talk down to me.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/9/2019, 11:55 AM
@Origame - I NEVER once said diversity is the only reason this film is being made. I even inferred that the story is worth adapting despite being a more obscure property. Are you reading and comprehending or are you just reaching for any argument you can to reinforce your fragility??

As for proving Shang-Chi fans exist, that’s just ridiculous. It’s not my burden to prove anything. And just because you’re oblivious to a specific thing does it mean its fans don’t exist. Look around…there are plenty of people excited for this movie. Your arguments are laughably unsubstantial.

And dear god, your last point is just pathetic. You, as a white man, feel discriminated against?! Don’t make me laugh. And who the hell is being beaten and tortured solely because the color of their skin is white?…. Please go ahead, I’ll wait.
Origame
Origame - 9/9/2019, 1:47 PM
@Tonic24k 1) you did when thats the only reason you gave outside of martial arts (and ive proven that false with other martial arts superheroes that would be more successful).

2) yes it is. You claim they exist while i say they don't. Are you saying the burden is on me? How do you prove something doesn't exist? I can prove, for example, there are fans for dragon ball (just look at the subscription count for tfs) but i can't be like "look at these people not asking for a shang chi movie".

3) dude, its the 2017 chicago torture incident. Where have you been?https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Chicago_torture_incident
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/9/2019, 2:22 PM
@Origame -

1. I literally reiterated where that wasn't my only point. It's simply an overall objective; to offer more diversity. A good thing to which only fragile homophobes and racists feel threatened. Again, READ AND COMPREHEND.

2. No shit. You can't prove a negative. Scientific principle. But I can point to the very obvious excitement that's being expressed for this Shang-Chi movie. Don't be so dense, the proof is on this very site. If you really want, you can find more proof, too. Facebook for example has a Shang-Chi fan page. I'm sure there's a subreddit as well. Now go do your own homework.

3. Where have I been? Lol. I was living in Chicago in 2017. I know all about this incident. But you're pointing to ONE incident that happened TWO years ago. Lmao. Of course I'm not going to recall this one incident in particular. Now go do some more homework and tell me how common hate crimes against white people are and how common hate crimes against minorities are. Just a heads up, you have a ton of fvcking research to do because the latter is littered throughout American (and global) history. Common knowledge. Get a clue.
Origame
Origame - 9/9/2019, 2:44 PM
@Tonic24k 1) dude, your objective is all you managed to bring across. You've failed to prove any other point.

2) well then why were you asking me to prove a negative? And btw, thanks for pointing me to that "fan" page of 800 people. Seriously, i have friends that are more popular than shang chi. And ive been on this site. More people care about this because of it giving us a comic accurate mandarin (who doesn't have anything to do with shang chi). Please point out someone here who's happy this movies happening just because its a shang chi movie.

3) well you clearly didn't since otherwise you'd have realized it when i spelled it out for you. And of course you won't find incidences of hate crimes against white people. Thats the problem im showing you. Because any time actual hate crime happens against white people, it isnt treated like hate crime. What about all the blm members attacking white people during their riots? But of course you're gonna ignore that.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 9/9/2019, 4:35 PM
@Origame -

1. Not arguing with you about this any more. You just continue to ignore the fact that I said it's a worth while story to adapt. Twice.

2. Again, something I never did. I never asked you to prove a negative. I simply said because you're oblivious to something it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. But I really don't care what you feel about this. There are plenty of people here on this site and elsewhere that are genuinely looking forward to this movie regardless of who the villain is. And even if that FB page was the ONLY page in existence and every single fan on the planet followed that page that's still 800 people you claimed didn't exist.

As for pointing out someone who's happy this movie is happening just because it's a Shang-Chi movie, um, look no further than this thread. There are some here including me, there are more on bigger articles, there are mfers that cosplay as Shang-Chi at comic con...like dude, the character isn't super well known but there are still fans that are excited for this movie because it's a Shang-Chi movie. This argument is [frick]ing dumb.

3. Yes I do remember that incident but you didn't spell it out. You mentioned something in vague terms and it was referring to ONE incident two years ago. Like that somehow equates to a perpetual issue. And I haven't ignored anything. You seem to be ignoring all of history though. Weigh it all out. Your argument is incredibly pathetic. I mean, were you never taught American history? White people invented the hate crime. Lol. They committed hate crimes for centuries before it even finally became a specific law categorizing it as such. The statistics are incredibly disproportionate. You seriously look like a fool even trying to argue this.
