BOX OFFICE: SHAZAM! Beats Estimates With $53M Domestic/ $158M Int'l Opening Weekend BOX OFFICE: SHAZAM! Beats Estimates With $53M Domestic/ $158M Int'l Opening Weekend

In the weeks leading up to the release of Shazam!, box office tracking had the WB film opening in the mid-$40 million range but it seems strong word of mouth will deliver another winner for DC Films.

Shazam! was rumored to have a production budget of only $100 million USD but it seems the actual figure is even lower, as it's now been confirmed that the film only cost Warner Bros. $80 million to produce.

With an opening weekend domestic haul of $53 million and a worldwide gross of $158.6 million, the film has virtually doubled its production budget in a single weekend. More impressively, the film only suffered a  4% drop from Friday to Saturday, indicating a strong word of mouth. Shazam! should prove to be extremely profitable for WB as it adds to its total in the coming weeks.

Director David F. Sandberg, executive producer Peter Safran, and screenwriter Henry Gayden can certainly ease any concerns they may have had about the chances of the film receiving a sequel.

Shazam! also provides strong evidence for the argument that all superhero films don't need $200+ million budgets to garner audience interest.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Doesn't seem like it's underperforming overseas as people said; $102M is in line with Deadline's $100-120M projection. As is the $155.5M global opening with their $140-170M prediction. Very solid numbers.
This may be a bold prediction, but I can see it having a $30M second weekend in the US (-44% drop).

Based on the opening weekend numbers, it's looking like 'Shazam!' will end up in the $350m to $450m range.

Not bad for its budget, but low in the modern era of superhero movies. It's hitting the lower end of worldwide expectations, which again, is decent.

It's probably heading to a $500M worlwide finish, which is excellent for a film that only cost $80M.

Hopefully, WB doesn't do something foolish like give the sequel a $200M budget.

@MarkJulian - With Endgame right around the corner, and it crashing in China, there’s zero chance it’ll finish with 500M.

@MarkJulian - $100M-$120M seems like a nice budget for the sequel.

@MarkJulian - $500m seems quite optimistic. I see $150m domestically, $50m in China, and $200m overseas outside of China myself for something around $400m.

'Shazam!' is failing in China which makes the worldwide finish reaching $500m incredibly unlikely, especially with 'Avengers: Endgame' on the horizon.

@Erik10101 - I bet the house that the sequel will have one or two big name asian stars to try to help the China numbers. Get in there Donnie Yen 😄.

@PlusUltra - Yesterday you said it wouldn't hit $400M. Now, you've moved the goalpost to $500M.

@Battabing - I haven’t moved anything. I still maintain it won’t hit 400M (and judging by these numbers and the way it crashed in China, it won’t).

Nice try though. 👍

Not bad for a low budget movie, but not great for a modern superhero movie. It’ll finish with 350-400M, and turnover a decent profit.

OT-ish: Kudos to Captain Marvel for her legs. Keep betting better the more competition she has. Guess people like the film after all (who would have thought?).
