The Hollywood Reporter is breaking the news that Oscar-Winning writer William Monahan has been tapped by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller to help write Sin City 2:

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are bringing in some Oscar-winning firepower to help shape the script for Sin City 2, the sequel to their 2005 hit graphic novel adaptation.

William Monahan, who won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for 2006’s The Departed, has been hired to work on the script, according to sources, supplementing a draft completed recently by Miller.

Well back at Comic-Con this year, Rodriguez, who co-directed the original with Miller said he would find money for the sequel and schedule shooting dates once a script could be locked down, and was targeting possibly the end of this year as a start date. Well, looks like Rodriguez wasn't just blowing smoke. Monahan is in high demand coming off The Departed and has written Tom Cruise's sci-fi project Oblivion and will re-unite with director Martin Scorsese for a remake of the 1974 drama The Gambler.

Robert Rodriguez has previously stated that the sequel film would be based on a A Dame to Kill For.
