Andrew Garfield Addresses One Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Franchise's Biggest Mysteries

It turns out that not even Andrew Garfield knows the answer to one of The Amazing Spider-Man's biggest mysteries, and he talks here about how not even "the filmmakers" seemed to know what was going on.

The Amazing Spider-Man included a baffling mid-credits scene featuring a mysterious man in a hat confronting Curt Connors, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw him talking to Harry Osborn and going about setting up the Sinister Six. A photo even surfaced of him putting Norman Osborn's head in storage, and while Marc Webb later identified him as Gustav Fiers (an obscure character from a Spider-Man novel who had little in common with this version), the original plan was for him to be Electro.

Either way, he was clearly set to be a key player, but in a new interview with Cinema Blend, even Andrew Garfield admitted to being baffled by the character. In fact, it really does sound like Sony was making it up as they went along. "I don't know that the filmmakers knew who the hell that guy was! [Laughs] I don't know, actually. I actually don't know. No. But the good news is that now none of us are ever going to find out, because that version of Spider-Man is no longer. Now we got Tom Holland, who I really think is going to do some beautiful stuff." That's probably the harshest Garfield has ever spoken about the franchise, and it's likely he's referring to The Amazing Spider-Man's producers.

Fiers would have likely returned in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Sinister Six, but who knows what his motivations and story arc would have been! The actor who played him - The Crow's Michael Massee - actually passed away earlier this week, so those would have marked his final two appearances as the character anyway. I'm so glad this franchise is dead. It was truly one of the most cynical cash grabs I've ever seen.
