Taking a break from filming his upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, director Sam Raimi joined Evan Spiliotopoulos for a Reddit AMA to promote their upcoming horror film The Unholy, which is due out in theaters tomorrow.
While the chat mostly stayed on topic, Raimi did take a second to answer a question about his beloved original Spider-Man trilogy.
Considering it's been nearly two decades since Raimi first directed Spider-Man, almost every major behind-the-scenes detail we'd want to know about the Tobey Maguire-led film ha been revealed by now, but he still managed to surprise us with a heartfelt response when asked what it was about Peter Parker, specifically, that convinced him to tackle the massive superhero movie.
"I directed the first Spider-Man film because I was such a huge fan of Stan Lee's brilliant character. Peter Parker and Spider-Man were an important part of my teenage years. I thought it was very moving how much he sacrificed for others. How hard he worked to protect innocent people. And all the while had to take care of his Aunt May and do his homework to boot. His self sacrifice resonated with me. He was truly a good person. We can identify with Characters in a comprehensible story. Stories of heroes, like Peter Parker, remind us of what we are capable of. Maybe you're one of those people that like to be reminded of the good you are capable of. Now get out there and do something about it."
While we'll be forever left wondering what his Spider-Man 4 might have looked like had Sony PIctures stayed on course with his version of the classic web-slinger, fans should be more than happy to know that Raimi will soon be back in the realm of comic book movies when his Benedict Cumberbatch-fronted Doctor Strange sequel portals into theaters next year.
