@RickGrimes - Spiderman 3 was worse than the Amazing Spiderman 2.

@SonOfAGif - I disagree. Spider-man 3 was more disappointing since there was a higher standard when it came out, but for me ASM 2 felt like more of a mess from start to finish. Max Dillon was horrible and felt very out of place, like someone plucked a villain out of a Schumacher Batman film. Electro's "It's my birthday. Now it's time for me to light my candles" line is cornier than anything in Spider-man 3. The Death of Gwen Stacy was ripe to be adapted for the Spider-man equivalent of The Dark Knight, so to make such a horrible movie was a terrible waste of potential. Peter and Gwen's wishy washy on again off again relationship was more annoying than compelling. Then there's the whole backstory with his parents that isn't even woven organically into the plot and Peter's arc.

@RickGrimes - Dunst was the same one who said that she didn't want to be known forever as Mary Jane and wanted to explore new roles. Everyone else said they would only come back if everyone else did, which included Franco. The only one who had no interest in coming back was Dunst.

@BIGBMH - Very true, that's not even touching the horrible design choices.

As much as we want to give Sam Raimi's Spider-Man shit for its Green Goblin costume, at least that was a good adaptation of the Goblin. Sure it wasn't faithful, but it was a decent job... ASM's Goblin on the other hand, I don't know WTF that was supposed to be.

On top of that, our first Lizard was an ugly mess that looked like it could have been a Ninja Turtle. Speaking of Electro, the design change was just horrible, that should have been more faithful than what we got. That, and the characteristics which you briefly touched on with Max Dillion, but we don't need to delve any deeper than that.

I wish we could have gotten a Spider-Man 4 to redeem the series, but it's too late for that now. Thankfully we have a new reboot that will hopefully be just as good, if not better than Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. But, we'll see if things work out or not (I'm hoping for the best).

If spider man homecoming looked exactly the same minus Mcu ties I don't think people would be super excited for it.
