It looks like fans aren't the only ones getting impatient for some official Spider-Man: No Way Home marketing, as some smaller theatres have begin using fan-made posters to promote the movie...

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to swing into theaters this December, but aside from a few unrevealing stills and some promo art, we've yet to see so much as an official promo poster for the highly-anticipated threequel.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios will begin promoting the movie when they're good and ready, of course, but it seems fans aren't the only ones whose patience is being tested.

As you'll see from the Tweet below, some theaters have begun to use fan-made posters to promote No Way Home. The bigger chains would obviously be under strict instruction to use only officially licensed materials, but it seems a few smaller cinemas are sick of waiting and want to get the word out while there's still a few months to go until the movie is released.

At least, we assume they're aware that these are fake posters - they're not even particularly good ones, after all!

While specific plot details are still under wraps, we do know that Spider-Man: No Way Home will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Spider-Man 2 actor Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, and TASM 2's Jamie Foxx as Electro, along with returning cast members Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori and Marisa Tomei.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield (among others) are expected to return as their respective takes on Spidey, but that's yet to be made official.

Still now word on that trailer, but we shouldn't be waiting too much longer.

I don't really mind waiting for a trailer (maybe after Shang-Chi, but I'm kinda expecting it to drop when that's released), but I agree they could atleast give us a poster

@bkmeijer - what if this was the first movie (to my knowledge anyway) that never gets a trailer and uses that word of mouth to hype the release? Obviously that won't happen, but if any movie could...

@ElricReturns - that would be interesting. Kinda pulling a reverse cult-film

@bkmeijer - At this point there is no reason to be holding the trailer off. Everyone saw both Loki and Wandavision so whatever spoiler their afraid is already out there. My theory is that Marvel Studios doesn't want to hurt the promotional tour for Shang-Chi because they know everyone will focus on Spider-Man and ignore Shang-Chi.

@SonOfAGif - I didn't even think of that, bit that makes sense. Extra reason for me to believe we'll see it when/after Shang-Chi releases

@SonOfAGif - yeah it's essentially this aye. Not wanting to have the promotional pushes to overlap and since spiderman 3 is the one that comes last after shang chi and eternals it only makes sense that it plays out like this:

Shang chi release: eternals 2nd trailer and spiderman NWH 1st trailer.

Eternals release: spiderman NWH 2 trailer.

I was actually surprised my theater did not show a single trailer for any movie before black widow, I was at least expecting shang chi trailer but nah.

@bkmeijer -
New style of marketting seems to advertise movies around 4 months prior or sooner, at that point its generally too late for them to delay most movies.

Sony definitely want NWH to make $1bn and will only release it at Christmas if Black Widow & Shang Chi perform well. So it's highly likely they will attach the first trailer to Venom: Let there be Carnage. If Marvel pushes back Eternals then they'll move back Spider-man: NWH.

Personally my expectations are:
• September 3rd 2021 - Shang Chi
- Keeps release date as too late to alter plans
• March 25th 2022 - Eternals
- Pushed back over concern of Winter months/Restrictions impacting box office
• May 6th 2022 - Spider-man 3
- Pushed back over concern of Winter months/Restrictions impacting box office
• July 8th 2022 - Doctor Strange 2
- Allows the film more time to breathe before Thor 4
• November 11th 2022 - Thor 4
- Releases in November as long as Pandemic has died down
• February 17th 2023 - Black Panther 2
- Aligns with U.S. Black History Month
• May 5th 2023 - Guardians Of The Galaxy 3
- Makes sense to keep current release due to popularity of the franchise
• July 28th 2023 - Ant-Man 3
- Both prior movies received a July release
• October 6th 2023 - The Marvels
- Pushed back to focus on more sure-fire hits.
• November 10th 2023 - Deadpool 3
• February 2024 - Fantastic Four
- Allows them to be set-up before Avengers 5, allowing for them to appear in that film
• May 2024 - Avengers 5
- Adapting 'Kang War'
• July 2024 - Captain America 4
- Last film of Phase 4, Adapting from 'Secret War'

Then Phase 5 begins with 'Blade' in October 2024.

@Scarilian - I really dont want the trailer to be connected to Venom, but I can see it happen.

As for their release schedule, I think they stick with the current one because they know Covid has and will keep [frick]ing it up.

My guess is from 2023 onward we'll see Ant-Man 3 (feb), Guardians 3 (may), Fantastic Four (july) and Blade (oct) and 2024 Deadpool 3 (feb), Avengers 4 (may) and Spider-Man 4 (july)

Funny that they feel the need to promote this.

Promote the little film that probably isn't going to bring in the customers. Spidey will be fine

@inkniron - Or maybe, I dont know... promote it when its actually going to come out. Might as well hang posters for Dr. Strange 3.
Origame
Origame - 7/22/2021, 1:30 PM
@inkniron - this acts as promoting the theater too. It's basically "come here later, we got these big movies". This will be especially important when pre-ordered tickets are available.
inkniron
inkniron - 7/22/2021, 1:59 PM
@Origame - Not a fan of the theater experience myself but if it's a theater hyping their ability to get a big blockbuster movie, then it's probably a little run down, not in great shape and not a theater I'd want to see it in.

Besides, I mean you can pre order direct from the theater web site but you can pick your venue at Fandango. All the major players are going to have it and if you're a fan of a smaller, locally owned place, it'll tell you there. The whole world is at your fingertips. Posters for the shadowboxes nearing at at release should be sufficient.
Origame
Origame - 7/22/2021, 2:21 PM
@inkniron - I think you're confusing my point. It's not "we actually have big movies here." It's "here's an upcoming movie you can see here". It's essentially associating the movie with that theater.
inkniron
inkniron - 7/22/2021, 3:13 PM
@Origame - Honestly, the last time a theater promo poster or cutout caught my eye was probably back in 99 when I went to see Varsity Blues and saw something on The Matrix. Since then, the internet has basically taken over advertising and that's where most people get their info from these days. I was also always under the assumption the good theaters will have the good movies. Most people are creatures of habit and will frequent the same establishments. It would be more surprising if they didn't carry a big film if they usually do.

Print media just isn't the same selling point it use to be. The big spectacle online trailers are where it's at If not for these impatient idiots, there would probably 3 people in the world that would see that promotional material and go 'Huh, a new Spider-Man movie. I had no idea. I might want to check it out'. Now they're out there possibly creating a false narrative, sending some people home to see a trailer that isn't releases, all for a movie that's going to rake anyway. Personally, I'd be more worried about putting asses in seats for current or the coming attractions in the next few weeks, trying to recoup some of those losses from the last year and increase my revenue stream instead of a promise that you're going to have a movie that your loyal customers and franchise fans know you'll have 5 months down the line, especially when there is no guarantee things won't be shut back down by then. Misspent energy and a misappropriation of advertising space if you ask me.
Origame
Origame - 7/22/2021, 4:22 PM
@inkniron - yeah but not everyone goes onto movie sites like this. Personally I'm getting a lot of people in my family asking about movies. And yes, a lot of them aren't aware no way home is coming.

Theaters must be itching for a lawsuit.. however I agree - at least give them a generic teaser poster to use FFS. The film is only 5 months away.
