We all know Spider-Man does whatever a spider can, and that seemingly includes breaking box office records! According to Sony Pictures, Spider-Man: No Way Home has grossed an estimated $253 million during its opening weekend at the North American box office, beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million) to have the third-highest debut of all time.

An amazing $73.8 million Sunday means it's only just behind Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million), and should it exceed expectations today, it might just beat that movie's record. Avengers: Endgame remains at #1, though, with the biggest opening weekend ever: $357 million.

This pre-pandemic level of success shows how much interest there is in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the threequel has already grossed 1.5x more than Eternals did during its entire run. Other records include Sony Pictures biggest opening ever and the biggest December domestic box office debut.

"This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve," Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, tells Deadline"All of us at Sony Pictures, are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film. Thanks to their brilliant work, this Christmas everyone can enjoy the big screen gift of 2021’s mightiest Super Hero —your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."

Overseas, Spider-Man: No Way Home has similarly exceeded expectations with $334 million since opening on Wednesday. As a result, the movie has already grossed $587 million, meaning it's closing in on that $600 million mark without a China release. Within days, we should see it become 2021's highest-grossing title globally, topping both No Time to Die and F9: The Fast Saga

Based on these numbers, we can't help but think Warner Bros. could regret releasing The Matrix Resurrections so soon after Spider-Man: No Way Home. With that and Christmas now right around the corner, something tells us this should be an interesting week for box office revenue...
