Ozy Revisits Superman Returns

Ozy Revisits Superman Returns

So I just finished watching Superman Returns for the first time in about a year and does it deserve all the hate it gets? Or is just a misunderstood film with fanboys? Hit the jump to find out!

Superman Returns, a film that all of us fanboys long to hate. The film that supposedly disgraced the character of Superman. Bryan Singer's "tribute" to the 1st 2 Superman films has been despised by almost all of fanboys for particular reasons. I'll get to some of the reasons later. But anyway as I was watching this I noticed some new good things about it and some new bad things about it. The last time I watched this was in 2009, so I hardly remembered anything about the movie itself. But I found myself watching Bryan Singer's film...

The film tells the story of Superman returning to Earth after several years of absence. He finds that his love, Lois Lane has moved on with her life, and that his archenemy Lex Luthor is plotting a scheme that will destroy the United States. I found the plot to be somewhat boring as there wasn't exactly a real villian in this as it was Lex Luthor...again. However, I felt it got somewhat more exciting as the movie progressed.

The beginning of the movie gave me shivers as I heard Marlon Brando's voice and saw the destruction of Krypton. I also liked how John Williams music was used and how the credits were styled. Bryan Singer also put in some humor in some of the scenes. But I especially loved the cinemotography and how the Superman suit looked. Yes, they removed the S from the back of the cape but I thought the suit looked way better without it. The visual effects were astounding, especially where Superman is floating above the earth and looking down upon it.

As for the actors, Brandon Routh did a great job as both Clark Kent and Superman. He played the part so well that I thought I was actually looking at Christopher Reeve for a couple of scenes. The annoying part of the cast is Kate Bosworth, which is no surprise. I don't know what it is but she is annoying, plain and simple. Kevin Spacey, who I really liked as Lex Luthor, did a outstanding job as Lex. James Marsden was fine, as were all of the other actors.

My main gripe is the son, which is the only part of the movie that I absolutely hate apart from Kate Bosworth. I found the son plotline to be somewhat un-needed and I really wish that Bryan Singer had left it out. Another gripe of the movie, as I mentioned before is the fact that Lex Luthor is once again the villain. No Brainiac, no Doomsday, just Lex Luthor again. And of course there should of been a little more action, I felt.

So, I don't think this film should really get all the hate it gets but I think it would have been nice to have seen a sequel to it instead of a reboot. I wonder what Bryan Singer would have possibly done...
