“Superman Returns” had mixed reviews. I’ll admit, it wasn’t perfect. But it was a great movie. I, for one, enjoyed it a lot. That scene with the plane was amazing. You could just feel the power radiating from the Man of Steel. Another great scene was with the Kryptonite island. Try to honestly say that watching the world’s greatest hero(yeah, it’s not Batman) lift an entire continent of his only weakness wasn’t enough to make you scream for more and almost forget the movie’s many mistakes. Of course, the mistakes. Like any movie, it wasn’t without its flaws. Some of the worst scenes include the incredibly pathetic break-in of the Fortress. Being Superman, he should have had some sort of security there. And there were the obvious Reeve/Donner references. Luthor knowing the Fortress’s location and Superman having a son with Lois(they slept together) are from “Superman II“. Having Jonathan Kent be dead(or at least, missing or not there), Brando reprising his role via CGI and Spacey’s performance of Luthor mimicking Hackman’s were obviously from the first movie. But apart from that, I didn’t really find anything that was obviously from the Reeve movies that wasn’t in the comics.

People generally dislike Routh’s portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent for being an obvious rip-off of Reeve. Well, if anyone finds a good version(emphasis on GOOD) of Superman that at least doesn’t act a little like Reeve, let me know. Besides, Routh was pretty much playing the comic book Superman. He had the heroic, brave Superman almost perfectly. You could almost immediately tell that he was here to help. He just had this kind of aura. On the other side of Kal-El’s personality, we have Clark Kent. As much as I liked Reeve as Superman, his Clark was a little over-the-top. The whole point of having a secret identity is to not draw attention to yourself, so it stays secret. An overly clumsy, bumbling idiot, however, is not someone you’re likely to forget easily. On the other hand, a quiet, shy Clark, or even a strong and confident one, isn’t obviously saying: “ I’m pretending! I have a huge secret I’m trying to hide”. For this reason, I think Dean Cain was the best Clark. However, Routh’s Clark was, unlike Reeve’s, a shy, quiet, slightly clumsy person, the kind you normally wouldn’t pay much attention to and definitely wouldn’t suspect of being Superman. As I said before, Routh played the comic book Superman almost perfectly. The one thing I didn’t see in the movie is a strong, powerful leader, which is what Superman needs to be. However, later, when I was wondering, “What the heck happened to that Routh guy?” I happened to be watching Chuck when Routh shows up. Yes, I know Shaw turned out to be a villain but in the time he was shown as a hero, Routh was able to play a strong, effective leader and mentor to Chuck. Another problem in SR corrected in a different movie: In “Superman Returns”, most of us were disappointed to not see Superman throw a single punch in the entire movie. However, in he recently released “Dylan Dog” trailer, Routh’s fight scenes are amazing( but never trust a trailer to say a movie is going to be good. Transformers: ROTF was crap even though the movie was awesome).

Now to the second point of this article. Nolan has already said that he will keep the Superman and Batman universes separate. That means, along with Bale being out as Batman, that Cavill, as awesome as will be, will most likely not returns for a “World’s Finest“ or “Justice League” movie. With Marvel releasing movies leading up to the “Avengers“, DC will have to do better than just “Green Lantern” if they want to rival them. What better way than to bring the Avengers’ rival hero team, the JLA, to the big screen? Unfortunately, it is impossible to make a successful JLA movie without Superman [“Legends of the Superheroes”(1979), “Justice League of America”(1997)], but to do that, we need to have a successful franchise leading up to it, like Marvel. But without Cavill, we need someone else who has both the look and acting skills but can also bring in a large audience. With “Smallville” ending, that might free up Tom Welling, right? Wrong. Welling has already stated that after “Smallville”, he will never play any Superman character, especially not Superman, except for Lex Luthor, if given the opportunity. I’m not making this up, if you want to research it, go ahead. But anyways, back to the point. Routh was a favorite for the role. On the Internet, there are still some people who want to get rid of Cavill in favor of him to return. Besides, Routh is a good actor(as I explained earlier) and definitely has the look. How many other good actors besides Cavill have a square jaw, piercing(hopefully blue) eyes, chiseled features and a friendly smile? Didn’t think so. Routh also has the perfect height and build, standing tall at 6’3”(the perfect height for Superman) and is muscular, but not too big to hide in an average suit and definitely not bodybuilder size. Although there are other actors who fit the description and would be great in the role, like Matthew Fox, Tahmoh Penikett and Michael Trucco, they are way too old to start a franchise. Routh, however, is only 31, and by the time a “DCU” franchise ends, wouldn’t even be forty. However, unlike his appearance around the time “Superman Returns” came out, he doesn’t look too young. He’s matured quite a lot. And if Nolan does continue his DCU, at least Routh has a chance to returns as the Man of Steel on TV, with “Smallville” ending and the “Wonder Woman” show being obvious crap, and DC needing a new TV show to compete with Marvel’s movies.

For those of you that have already made up their minds about Routh, either:

A) You(like Superguy) disliked(or hated) the casting of Routh in the first place, so therefore, this article was a complete waste of time and I apologize for it.
or:
B) You(like grif) just dislike(or hate) just about everything and therefore, I have nothing to say to you.

If they make a Justice League Movie they should use the Justice League from Smallville.

Since they have hired a replacement for Brandon the only way I think he could come back to the role of Superman is maybe if on Smallville they wrapped up the Supergirl storyline by sending her to the future to join the Legion of Superheros and Brandon can play Kell-El.

I didn't have an issue with this at all until the end.

"For those of you that have already made up their minds about Routh, either:
A) You disliked(or hated) the casting of Routh in the first place, so therefore, this article was a complete waste of time and I apologize for it.
or:
B) You just dislike(or hate) just about everything and therefore, I have nothing to say to you."

They aren't the only 2 options.
You can't just announce that there are only 2 ways that people can disagree with you.

I was enthusiastic about Brandon and thought he looked pretty damn good (although a little young) so I went to see the film in the first week.
I thought the movie was boring itself, hated Spacey's Lex, and as well as that, I wasn't impressed with Routh's acting at all.
I think he's okay and I think he's a good guy in reality but I don't think he played a good Superman.
I know you enjoyed his portrayal a lot and that's cool but what you're doing is like telling a person who doesn't like chicken that chicken is great and you have a list of reasons why chicken is tasty.

Anyway, cool article. I disagree with you and I hope you're able to enjoy the new film.

Smallville probably would do that, but never bring it to the big screen.

erase him MIB style? if you watched this film when you were 5 you would hold it as high in your mind as reeve's films. it was the script that had flaws, not him. he played with what was given to him. and played great.

@Supermanfan01-Why are you doing this article?? Why post about a guy won't even be Superman? It's HENRY CAVILL's TURN. Give it up. If you don't like Cavill and you're still pissy about Routh not being brought back to butcher the new film, then DON'T [frick]ING SEE IT.

Furthermore Routh's acting SUCKS. Every role he's been in he sucks, his acting is wooden and stale.

Routh is NEVER coming back and nor should he. It's Henry Cavill's turn.

LP4 - 2/22/2011, 10:11 PM
@Teabag- EXACTLY. Routh had the personality of a floorboard! :D

@Supermanfan01- I still can't understand why you made this article. HENRY CAVILL IS SUPERMAN.

Routh had his shot already. He got the role back even when Cavill had auditioned for it. Let Cavill have his chance. You're trying to dictate to everyone how we should think and you're trying to force-feed us more ROUTH and no one wants him back. Routh is done and GONE. Leave it that way.
LP4
LP4 - 2/22/2011, 10:13 PM
@Denn1s- How did Routh play it "great"?

He didn't do or say anything at all. He had no dialogue!

@Supermanfan01- See this is the problem with your article...you're re-igniting the routhbootist war...AGAIN and it's not even necessary now that we know HENRY CAVILL is our new Superman. There is no need to keep the war going on about Routh. He's HISTORY.

Again, if you routhbootists are still angry and bitter- DON'T BOTHER SEEING THE NEW MOVIE.

The rest of us will watch and enjoy the new film for what it is- A TRUE SUPERMAN FILM WITH A TRUE SUPERMAN ACTOR.

@NinjaCarm- Keep up the good fight! :D

As long as there is a Superman in the media I will continue to battle against Routh ever returning.

He has ZERO personality in his roles. The best thing Routh can do for himself (and for others) is to hire an acting coach.

It is Henry Cavill's turn to be Superman. Making these routh-articles BEGGING for him to return is almost as pathetic as Angelus's article also BEGGING for Routh to return. There's a reason he was scrapped and replaced- WB DOESN'T WANT HIM BACK. They want the audience to forget about Superman Returns and in that sense they will NEVER bring back Routh- GOOD RIDDANCE.

Oh and lastly- blaming the script is a tired and lame excuse. If that were the case then that would also apply to ANY bad actors in Hollywood...thus there'd be no bad actors in Hollywood. RIGHT??

Snyder himself said he'd reconsider Routh but from what I read- HE NEVER EVEN CONTACTED ROUTH. Hell the top like- 5 or 6 contestants...NONE OF THEM WERE ROUTH. Routh never came anywhere near even the audition and that's because Snyder didn't want him in the film and that's because Snyder has COMMON SENSE and knows that routh is a bad/stale actor. Routh can't evoke ANY emotion.

Routh blows. Better to face that fact now because HENRY CAVILL is Superman. Routh is just...dylan dog. And nothing more.

+1 to Corndog

It's OVER, GTF Over it already

Welling can't act and Routh is just a stiff actor. Even with that crappy script he should have been acting like more of a hero or an imposing figure rather than just a shy, quiet, emo Supes.

Cavill IS The Man of Steel

Routh was the worst Superman ever. That guy doesn't look imposing or threatening in any way. He was way too wimpy looking, and acted about as well as a 2x4.

Welling is just laughable.

And for picking on me all the time just for expressing my feelings- YOU'RE the mean one. BULLY.

Henry Cavill is Superman. It is completely mean and uneccessary for you people to make these articles begging for Routh to be Superman, just when Cavill gets the gig. Cavill has been trying to get the Superman role for YEARS. Routh already had his shot. Time for you routh-fans to stop being so damn selfish and self-centered and let Cavill be Superman!

"the little dialogue he had anyway. he was great as clumsy clark"

Hahaha that proves how badly Routh blows. ANYONE can play a clumsy Clark Kent, any moron taken off the street can do that. But even as clumsy Clark...his acting just seemed "forced" Routh is NO GOOD.

@Bane and SuperManFan01- If you guys love routh so much and are so pissed he's not in the new film- DON'T SEE THE NEW MOVIE.

Furthermore @BaneKill- I have a RIGHT to state my opinion on this article. YOU have no right to insult me for stating my opinion you ASSHOLE. So LEAVE ME ALONE. Fact remains- It is HENRY CAVILL'S TURN TO BE SUPERMAN. Routh had his damn shot! Cavill IS Superman.

Nice article! I personally liked Routh as Superman because he showed the emotional side without making Superman look like a panzy. You have to watch Returns with a different mindset to appreciate it. It's a love story full of emotion, but still having action. The plane save scene was so amazing, and if you dont agree just because you don't like Routh or the movie in general, you're lying. Taking a bullet in the eye and smiling, throwing a kryptonite infused continent into space, and when he first lands on the continent from flying, smashing the ground was really cool. Floating in space, listening to the sounds of the earth, then flying through the atmosphere, breaking the sound barrier. Tell me that wasn't cool in the slightest.

However, I am excited to see someone else portray the character. I don't like a british guy doing it, but I'm willing to give him a chance.

@SuperManFan01- HENRY CAVILL is SUPERMAN. Give it up routh-fans.

Oh and to answer your question Routh is a bad actor- he had very few lines in Superman Returns and even the few lines he DID have he sounded very "bland" and very "stale" and his emotions or lack-there-of seemed very "forced"

If you watch his other roles- his cameo in Zack and Miri and his role in Scott Pilgrim- he acted the SAME WAY he did in Superman Returns- bland and forgettable.

@Ninjacarm- Hahaha saved you the trouble of explaining to SuperManFan01- on WHY routh is such a SHIT actor :D but keep up the good fight "Ninjacarm"! ;D

@Deadshot- RIGHT ON! Routh's performance put me to sleep too in the theater. That is sad. :D

Having few lines doesn't make someone a bad actor. Besides, you need a backup casting in case Cavill is busy or something.
LP4
LP4 - 2/23/2011, 1:51 PM
@SuperManFan01- No, what makes the person a bad actor is when the few lines he actually DOES have sound "forced" and "labored"

Watch the bar scene with Routh when he actually says a line or two and it sounded REALLY labored. It is hard to explain but if you watch all his other roles they are all the same- few lines if ANY and when he speaks- not very inspiring. Superman is meant to inspire the populace- I can't see Routh ever doing that. I am sorry for getting so mad earlier but jeezus people can we just enjoy Cavill being Superman? Can't people give the guy a chance before they start trying to lobby for Routh to take the role away? Cavill lost his chance back in 2006 because Routh got the role. It is Henry's turn now.

Henry Cavill deserved the role more than most and he will be an EPIC Superman.
LP4
LP4 - 2/23/2011, 1:54 PM
Cavill's dream was always to be Superman. I literally almost shed a tear when I read about all the times he came CLOSE to getting the part only to be overlooked for someone else. Now he finally got the part. It's like- when you work so hard for something for so many years...and you finally get it. That is why Henry Cavill's story is so inspiring- NEVER give up on your dreams.

I'm seriously rooting for Cavill.

That is why I get upset with people making these "pity" articles for Routh. I know you have a right to do just that...but I don't know. I still don't think Routh deserves much pity. And i mean making this article right on the heels of Cavill being announced as Superman...just seems planned-out or something.

I just want people to enjoy Cavill as Superman. He is the one person who really deserved the role he got. The man worked hard for it and now THIS is his chance and his dream. I say- let him have it.
SuperManFan01
SuperManFan01 - 2/23/2011, 2:12 PM
Look, LP4, I have nothing against Cavill. I am supporting him, honestly, but I also liked Routh. Back when a sequel was still planned, Routh was my number one, with Cavill in a close second. Now it's the other way around, with Cavill already cast. By the way, where's LEEE777? He usually comments on this sort of thing, and takes the "Routh-for-Superman" side. Or did he stop that?
