According to TV Line, their sources are hearing that the spinoff Walking Dead series in development at AMC is a prequel. The site reports, "There’s increasing buzz that the offshoot will be a prequel of sorts, one that would chronicle the early days of the epidemic and the effort to contain it." The original press release confirmed that Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are serving as executive producers , with AMC Studios set to produce.

Unlike the current series which is based on the Image Comics ongoing monthly from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, the spinoff will feature an entire new cast of characters and storylines. AMC is aiming for a 2015 air date for the series. In a separate interview, Kirkman expounded further, saying the new series won't be set in Georgia.

Theoretically it could work, a series set during the time Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was in a coma and the world came to grips with the reality that the undead were roaming down suburban streets. Watching the American landscape change from the one we know currently to what it's become on The Walking Dead may be just enough to excite even the most jaded of fans. Not that The Walking Dead is suffering by any means, it's still the most watched show on television among adults 18-49.
