This week brought the surprising announcement that Batwoman star Ruby Rose had decided to part ways with the CW series ahead of its recently renewed second season.

Soon after the news broke, WWE Superstar and former MMA fighter Sonya Deville (real name Daria Berenato) took to Twitter to express interest in the role, asking The CW and showrunner Greg Berlanti to give her a "shot at playing Batwoman."

Sonya, who is the first openly gay female wrestler in WWE, was asked about her Tweets during an interview with TV Insider. She revealed that she's been actively pursuing an acting career for a while now, and explained why she believes she's the right person to take over as the small-screen Scarlet Knight.

"When I was a girl growing up, I wouldn't play with Barbie dolls — I’d play with Max Steel dolls. I remember watching Superman and Batman and thinking, 'Why can’t there be more female superheroes in the spotlight?' You had Wonder Woman, but that wasn’t at the forefront like it is now. Ruby Rose being a member of the LGBTQ community and being Batwoman, I remember when I heard she got the role. I was so excited. I thought it was huge and inspiring.

When I saw she stepped out, I was like, 'This is a no-brainer. I can do my own moves. I fit the role. We can also keep on the message you can be a woman. You can be gay. You can be a superhero.' I think it speaks for itself. It’s definitely a dream role. I’m going to continue my social media campaign. I like to speak things into the universe because you have to believe it for it to be possible."

These type of social media campaigns rarely pay off, but there have been some notable exceptions. If the decision makers become aware of Deville's desire to play Kate Kane and believe she might be a good fit, there's nothing to say she won't get an opportunity to read for the role at the very least.

What do you guys think? Could you see Sonya Deville as Gotham's new Caped Crusader? Drop us a comment in the usual place.
