Another casting addition for Netflix's The Sandman here, as Elanor Fanyinka (Holby City) has joined the adaptation in the small, but key role of Rachel. Neil Gaiman has also shared an update on Delirium...

Though most of the major roles in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman have now been filled, there are a couple of key parts that have yet to be announced. One of them is John Constantine, and while we still don't know who'll be playing the wise-cracking Scouse occultist, a character who is integral to his arc has been cast.

Eleanor Fanyinka (Death in Paradise, Holby City, Epic) is set to play Rachel, an ex girlfriend of Constantine's. She only appears briefly in the comic when Morpheus discovers that she's been using the magical sand from his pouch (the results are not pretty), but will likely have an expanded role in the series.

If nothing else, Rachel's involvement would seem to confirm that JC will appear - although there's been a lot of speculation that Jenna Coleman's Johanna Constantine (John's distant ancestor) will fulfill his role in the story.

In related news, Gaiman has shared an update on Delirium. Fans have been wondering who'll play the youngest member of The Endless family, but since she doesn't show up until the "Seasons of Mists" arc, the character has yet to be cast.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

Considering how involved Gaiman seems to be, I think this show is gonna turn out great. Wonder how many DC characters are gonna appear though

@bkmeijer - I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible, but I wish the show had been developed for HBO or even Amazon. Netflix is just so hit-and-miss.

@RorMachine - that's why I specifically mentioned Gaiman's involvement. Without him I would've been far less optimistic. Especially after their most recent attempt at a comic book property

I haven't loved any of the other adaptations of his work except for Coraline really. So hopefully this one does it

Yeah I think I'll pass on this,I want a Sandman show but from the castings so far I don't think this will be for me.

Too many changes from the source material.

@marvel72 - I'll be honest, I don't know much about Sandman...but I can sympathize with fans that have waited a long a time to see a certain character interpreted only for them to flip it on its head.

Does race changes always mean a different personality? No, most actors can still pull it off unless race played a role in the characters composition. However, there is still something said for what it means in a visual medium. Like it or not, what we see in a comic or graphic novel means something to the fans, this is what we had to start with and build the mythos/fanbase on. So for example, when we've grown up with our Mary Jane Watson or Red Sonja's as pale skin redheads, then yes, it can be jarring when the idea is to not consider such actresses for the roles for live action.

Its like expecting our Constantine to be a blonde white dude but an arabic or black guy is cast in the role instead. Good for the actors on the opportunity...but then these studios act surprised or defensive on the backlash or commentary. I often feel bad for the actors and actresses because they get caught in the middle of it all as fans begin to react, often times unfavorably.

It is what it is with modern day sensitivities and all!

@Origame - I can't stand that! It feels like a trap from the get go. They get to make these changes and then go run and hide behind the shield of virtue signaling like they don't understand why someone would be surprised or upset by the casting.

We live in this era where people's favorite written mediums, comics/graphic novels in particular can be adapted for live action. That is a very exciting prospect to many long time fans, who have in their heads what the source material set up as the source of truth. And these people have the nerve to pretend like every single negative response comes from a place of hate or something.

This is the ultimate game of the emperor wears no clothes! We're supposed to just go along with everything, ask no questions, clap and give praise to every decision like lemmings!
