The title character from the current Lucifer TV show is (loosely) based on the incarnation of the fallen angel that was introduced in the pages of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, but we will soon get to meet the real Lucifer in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of the acclaimed DC Vertigo comic series.

Though it was lost in the shuffle somewhat amid all of the big teaser reveals, a new character poster for The Sandman debuted during DC FanDome tonight, giving us a first look at Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie as the all-mighty Morningstar.

In the comics, Morpheus travels to Hell to find his helmet after it ends of in the hands of a demon. Lucifer allows him to battle the creature for the right to reclaim his property, but takes his victory as a personal slight and vows to one day destroy the lord of dreams.

Check out the poster below along with a couple of follow-up Tweets from Gaiman. In case you missed them, you'll find banners featuring Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Desire (Mason Alexander Park) here.

The Sandman also stars Logan actor Boyd Holbrook as sadistic escaped nightmare The Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) as The Dreaming's loyal custodian Lucienne, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror) and Sanjeeve Bhaskar (Yesterday) as Abel and Cain, respectively.

We recently learned that Desire will be played by Donna Preston, while Joely Richardson will play Ethel Cripps, and David Thewlis will take on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny. Jenna Coleman will play John Constantine's great-great-great grandmother, Lady Johanna Constantine.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

The lighting and shadows from the wings make the hairstyle looks a bit odd here. Still like the casting though. Looking forward to this.

Another exciting chance for people to tell Neil Gaiman he's wrong about his own story.

I'm sure she will do a great job. Lucifer is such an interesting character in the graphic novels. I'm interested to see her take.

Read in this article ‘Donna Preston will be playing Desire’. Googled her because I’m human and I was curious and wanted to see a pretty lady. Saw Donna Preston. Was skeptical. I believe she’s playing Despair. Then again, in my experience Desire and Despair are usually closely linked, unfortunately.

@connorblaze - nevermind just looked up who is actually playing Desire. Donna Preston is fine, forget I said anything. I desire donna, all day, let’s go.
