Fans were wondering if the events of issue #6 of The Sandman would be adapted for the upcoming Netflix series, and Neil Gaiman has now confirmed that John Dee will enter that diner for "24 Hours."

It looks like Netflix really is committed to bringing fans a faithful adaptation of The Sandman, right down to the controversial events of issue #6.

In "24 Hours," John Dee, aka Doctor Destiny (who'll be played by David Thewlis), walks into an all-night diner to await his showdown with Morpheus, and decides to pass the time by forcing the people inside to play his twisted games by using the Dream Stone to control their minds.

We're not going to describe what happens in any detail, but suffice to say things quickly take a turn for the depraved.

Because Dee's little distraction isn't really vital to the overall story and could easily be compacted into a scene or two, we weren't sure Netflix would actually adapt the entire issue, but Neil Gaiman has now confirmed that it'll take place over the course of the fifth episode.

And just in case you think they might have toned anything down...

In all seriousness, there's no way they're going to depict all the horrendous shit that goes on in that diner, but even the mere suggestion should be enough to traumatize a whole new generation of fans.

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

No way they show everything that goes down in that story.

One of the few times a comic made me feel genuinely uneasy

@Waddles - Patton Oswalt saying he himself won't watch it worries me that it will veer toward torture porn.

@BlackBeltJones - Eh, Oswalt is a comedian first and foremost. I'd assume he's just being hyperbolic.

@BlackBeltJones - There's already a very accurate fan film. And yes, they are doing all of it. The show is rated MA.

They should do the cereal convention storyline.

Haven't read the comic, so thanks for the heads-up I guess

Just wondering exactly how much Netflix is going to let them get away with? Guess I'll have to watch to find out which I was going to do anyway.

@Mugens - In the concept art, Dream has pants on when he shouldn't have pants on. So I'm thinking this is gonna be the censored Sandman. Maybe it should've been HBO?

Fell asleep listening to this part of the audible version. Safe to say I didn’t sleep so well that night

@Evansly - definitely worth a listen. McAvoy does a great Dream. I’ve listened to it multiple times. Signed up to audible just for it so got it for free since you get one free audio book when you join.

I'm at the point that I'd rather have hbo do everything, somehow it always works lol. I'm glad to hear they're including this at least

That issue was controversial?
MarkCassidy

@BritishMonkey - At the time, I believe so. Even though the comic was under DC's "Suggested For Mature Readers" label, many felt it took things too far. I don't think it was ever censored or anything.

@RorMachine - Interesting...
When I read the issue I thought it was rather creepy and great for a horror story but yeah that's totally news to me that it's controversial.

I'm really glad to hear they are dedicated to adapting the comic almost right off the page from the sounds of it.

While I do love adaptations that go a separate direction, I always thought Sandman was a cinematic comic all throughout, and deserved to be adapted as accurately as possible.

I hope they do the one with the Sand Man, where he uses sand.
(I also have not read Neal Caymen's Sand Man)

Interestingly this is issue 6 of the comic. So if it's one episode per issue, I think they might be skipping over issue 5, 'Passengers'(or at least condensing it into a few simple moments).

I suspect this might be due to licencing issues. Issue 5 features:
- Martian Manhunter.
- Arkham Asylum.
- The Scarecrow.
- Mister Miracle.
- Granny Goodness.
- Aurelie (female fury).
- The Hunger Dogs.
- Apokolips.
- JLI HQ.
- Justice League Satellite.
JLA, Batman and Joker are all mentioned.

Yeah, I think there are some licensing issues.

I also think this might be why Jenna Coleman is playing both Lady Constantine and modern day Constantine. I'm pretty sure she's replacing John. Her revised character description says "Haunted exorcist. Adventuress for hire". Now while 'Adventuress' sounds very Lady Constantine 'Haunted exorcist' is does not. That sounds like John. So I don't think they're actually allowed to connect to the DC Universe as much.

They can't do John Constantine but Johanna Constantine is a Neil Gaiman character created for The Sandman, so they can use her.

@GwenLantern - I agree, but I think we do get Arkham Asylum here and with some Bat-villains Easter eggs that tease the dinner episode, like Scarecrow and Mad Hatter.

Please don't turn that scene into torture porn. I hate that.
It is a great scene in the comic, but... I don't know. I'm curious how this will go down in live action without looking like a Rob Zombie remake of Saw... Which is weird, because although I can't see a live action version of this scene without thinking that, the comic did not give me that impression AT ALL.

That issue is pretty hardcore & great comic book horror, but there's no shot they keep all of it. There's a great fan film of it too, it tones down some of the graphic stuff while keeping the horror dialed up. I think the show will probably go a similar route with it.

You're a bit late. Neil confirmed this SEVAERAL times. This was just the latest confirmation. He confirmed 24 Diner is in it back in January... when they were actually filming the episode...
