It's been confirmed that Savannah Welch is set to take on the role of Barbara Gordon in season three of Titans (which is now heading to HBO Max, and not the defunct DC Universe platform).

What you may not know about the actress is that she's an amputee, having lost one of her legs following an accident in 2016. She's since become a spokesperson for those in the disability community, though it's unclear whether Barbara Gordon will be portrayed as an amputee in the DC Comics series.

An official breakdown for the character in Titans describes her as, "Gotham City Police Commissioner. Uses a wheelchair. She used to be Batgirl until she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker. She has a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne. Her life gets more complicated when Dick Grayson returns to Gotham, rekindling their old romance and starting a new crime fighting partnership."

Now, Welch has taken to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video which confirms that the former Batgirl will see at least some action in Titans. As you can see, the actress is working from a seated position.

Welch is clearly a tough-as-nails badass, so it should be fun to see what she brings to the role.

@BlackBeltJones - LOL! this is how HBO Max is going to save money in her flashbacks before the wheelchair

That's pretty badass. I'm glad that she isn't just "woman-in-the-chair" for the whole series. I always loved Oracle stories where someone attempted to breach the clocktower and she had to fight them off.

I’m starting to see a career opportunity. Are there any Cuban junkies in comics? Doesn’t matter, I’ll go ahead and get started on my career.

I mean even in a chair Barbara is still a pretty badass fighter. Glad to hear it.

I hope we get Barbara being Batgirl again and her arc is she adapting herself to her new status and kicking some ass by the middle of the season.

@cocaegelo - I'm guessing not since otherwise I don't know why they'd hire a disabled actress for the role.

@Origame - Well, Titans writers have a history to disappoint the audience with their choices hahhaha

This has been a very forgettable series. Case in point... I saw this article and wondered if I missed season 3 and didn't even care if I did.

Crip here. I'm guessing Babs won't be an amputee--that detail's pretty easy to hide beneath clothes--but instead they hired Welch for her disability cred. There have been good shows that internet activists demanded recast when they hired an able-bodied person to play a crip. So since the pickings for actual paraplegic actresses are pretty slim--plus soundstages are NOT wheelchair accessible--they got someone with a less-severe impairment to appease the twitter mob.

I genuinely hope Welch does good, though. Oracle is my favorite character and her fandom's had a rough time of it the last ten years.
