AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Clark Gregg Addresses Whether He'll Play Phil Coulson Again

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s final season is fast approaching, but will Clark Gregg return as Agent Phil Coulson? The actor has addressed that question, and admits to having an uncertain future in the MCU!

Clark Gregg is a Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran, and he's been around since the very start after first playing Agent Phil Coulson in 2008's Iron Man. His story reached a tragic end four years later in The Avengers, but Marvel Television resurrected him the next year in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Seven years later, and his time as the character (now a Life Model Decoy) appears to be reaching its end, but is that really it for Coulson in the MCU? After all, he appeared in Captain Marvel for scenes which were set in 1995, so there has to be ways for him to continue playing the beloved hero.

"This seems like a real good time to announce that...I really don’t know," Gregg laughed when Variety asked whether he'll return. "Sorry. That was a little bit of quarantine sadism. I don’t know anything! It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where I’d say, 'No, I’m too busy to put on whatever the latest version of the suit is and go play Phil Coulson.' I’m always thrilled when I see them changing timelines and exposing a multiverse in the cinematic [universe]."

"Because I think, 'Well, I’ve seen scenarios where I could be around!' So I really learned with this character to never say never, but I’m also really grateful for the ride that we had."

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige doesn't appear too concerned with adhering to what happens on television with future MCU stories, so him bringing Coulson back isn't a huge stretch. Whether he will want to retread old ground, however, is unclear, but flashbacks are a distinct possibility.
