The Falcon and The Winter Soldier arrives on Disney+ this August, and it's thought that the series will follow Sam Wilson's transformation into Captain America. That's significant for a number of reasons, of course, but most noteworthy is the fact that this means the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon have an African American Captain America.
Mackie was asked about that during a recent interview to promote season two of
Altered Carbon, and it sounds like while it's not something he's taking lightly, he wants his version of Captain America to be a hero to everyone, not just a certain race (which is a very Captain America thing to say).
"With the idea of being a black man and becoming Captain America, it's been a daunting task because I think, at this day and age in America, I think we are open-minded to the idea of having my face represent us, as a country, because we're truly a melting pot," the actor says.
"So there is no distinctive look or feel or design of an American. We'll all Americans."
"I want my Captain America to represent everybody, not just a specific group of people."

Sam Wilson now wields the shield but it seems he hasn't quite mastered the knack of throwing it and making it rebound to him. Clearly, becoming Captain America is a learning curve!
