"Martin Scorsese Keeps Talking About Marvel"

Man, Scorsese is super obsessed with Marvel. He keeps talking about it as if he is a closet MCU fan...

"A good filmmaker comes in from Italy or France comes in," Whoa, real diversity there Marty! God forbid there should be a good filmmaker coming in from Korea or India.

You know it is possible to reference The Incredible Hulk without having to make the same old tired “black sheep of the franchise” remark.

I'm not sure if Martin is trying to do damage control or just double down on his weird take. He has a point about what is shown in theatres, but I think the real problem is that many studios either don't give smaller films wide releases or they can't afford it. I don't know if I've ever heard of a theatre refusing to show a specific type of film (except if the film is thought to be harmful, like Joker in Aurora).

@Necropolitan - sometimes I think its damage control, sometimes I think he is obsessed with Marvel (though note, Coppola hasn't continuously talked about Marvel whereas Martin has). And the point Martin is trying to make, he has decided to go about it in the worse possible way that entirely undercuts his argument: "I have a point to make about cinema!" Immediately shoots himself in the foot.

@HeavyMetal4Life - You can see how he's gradually gone from "They're not cinema" to "Theatres should show more different types of movies please and thank you" in some short weeks.

And I can't really blame him to feel the way he does. He must feel so marginalised in that despite being a legendary filmmaker, he might have had to beg film studios to give him 150 million to make The Irishman when he shouldn't, and he had to give his film to a streaming service. Meanwhile studios like Disney/Marvel, WB and Sony would readily shell out that same amount for a type of movie he simply doesn't get, made by directors he doesn't know.

Of course, saying Marvel movies weren't cinema was always a weird and wrong statement, but you can now see where his true frustrations lie. But Marvel is only a small part of how consumer tastes are changing as technology and film culture has changed.

@Necropolitan - I understand where his true frustrations lie, but as I mentioned before, the points he was trying to make, he decided to go about them in the worst possible way and ultimately completely undercut his argument. Rather than fueling a constructive, respectful, and intellectual conversation about the current state of the movie industry, Martin has instead painted himself as a jealous and bitter old man and the focus of his statements has been on his nonsensical disdain for Marvel movies.

Shang-Chi stuff is very potentially interesting. A martial arts contest mixed with some espionage/conspiracy/spy thriller stuff is quite new storytelling for the MCU. I'd actually really like that format. And one of the rumoured villains (Moving Shadow) is the character's half brother in the comics.

thats definitely Bruce Lee lol

But I really hope MCU does proper kung fu. Kung Fu that you can actually see in a wide shot.

@Kevwebsz - Well the director said they got the guy that shot the fight scenes in The Matrix films on purpose so I think we should be good.

@Kevwebsz - it should be on the level of Iko Uwais and his top movies: The Raid, The Raid 2, The Night Comes For Us.

@Necropolitan - Perfect. Hugo Weaving in a suit and tie has better fights than most modern movies lol
