Marvel Studios has announced that one of its Disney+ shows is finally getting a physical release... but there's a catch. A monumentally baffling catch.

The streamer's first ever Marvel Cinematic Universe series, WandaVision, will debut on limited edition Steelbook on September 27. The set will feature postcards, character cards, a folder, and exclusive release stickers - but no Blu-ray or DVD discs, and it's not yet clear if a digital download will be included.

We have no idea what the point of releasing something like this without any discs is, but we assume the idea is that fans can display the case as part of their collection while Disney keeps the actual episodes right where they are on the streaming service.

If you are interested in purchasing this (for some reason), it'll be available for pre-order from July 27 priced $37.99.

UPDATE: As many have surmised, this is not actually an official Marvel Studios product.

"Marvel Studios' WandaVision blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision – two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban life – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems."

In addition to Elizabeth Olen and Paul Bettany as the leads, WandaVision stars Kathryn Hahn, Teyonah Parris, Debra Jo Rupp, Randall Park, and Kat Dennings. Following the success of the series, an Agatha: Coven of Chaos spin-off featuring the return of Hahn as Agatha Harkness was announced.

$38 for basically nothing, sounds like a ripoff.

On September 28, you can buy $99.99 ultra limited edition from me, I will be throwing in the actual episodes in 4k on a disc.

@SpiderParker - will there be SpiderParker commentary?

@WruceBayne - You will have to wait for the Director's Cut for that one, the studio is adamant against it currently, but I'm sure we can rally some fans for the cause!

@SpiderParker - I've done worse things for $38 bucks.

Yes, give us extra money with no physical disks and instead the digital content you get free with your disney+ subscription.

mastakilla39 - 7/23/2023, 9:01 PM
@Origame - But with a subscription u have to pay forever. disc or ddl is a 1 time payment.
Origame
Origame - 7/23/2023, 9:19 PM
@mastakilla39 - yes, but that's about 3 months of disney+ for one show. And with that subscription, you get the show plus any other program on the streaming service.

Not to mention the lack of physical media means you don't own the show. You effectively have a lease on the show which can be taken from you.

The point of buying steel books is to own the media physically.

This is [frick]ing embarrassing, lol

@tmp3 - guess this is there loophole to avoid paying actors and writers residuals. they arent selling u a movie or digital download....its probably consider merch which they dont share with anyone

@tmp3 - It's not tho. This is a collector's item and very niche product. It will sell out the second it goes live on their website. In the collector's community, no one buys these for the discs. It's all about the premium box art and adding it to your collection. They're also VERY limited worldwide. They make 200-800.

Did Marvel Studios actually announce this? It seems to just be a collectible from a completely separate company. It's not a Disney or Marvel release, that I can see.

Looking it up, they also released "discless" steelbooks for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and for The Batman.

So it's a collectibles company making fancy cases that you can put your own copy of the film into. Only this time, it's for a show that doesn't have a hard copy already.

@Chewtoy - They had to okay it...whoever is doing the product would be sued otherwise....so Marvel/Disney had to give the okay.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 7/23/2023, 8:06 PM
@jst5 - Sure... they're making collectible cases for Marvel and DC. I'm sure that both companies sold a license to do so (or, as you say, they're going to get sued.)

But that still doesn't mean that Marvel "Announced" this, or that they're the ones releasing it as some kind of Blu Ray thing... it's just a company making bank off of the fuzziness behind the "steelbook" concept.

@ShellHead - Yes it is. Manta Lab is one of the best producers of what's called Premiums and One Clicks. Collectors have been buying from them for years.

I really wish they’d release the Disney+ MCU and Star Wars stuff on other platforms for purchase. If they waited 2 years or so that’s fine but I really wish they’d give us the option to own the entire collection

@Ha1frican - Agreed. I would love a 4K physical release of Loki. Probably the only Disney+ show I would buy to have in my collection.

@Feralwookiee - and it made sense because they were desperate to keep up with the unprecedented demand.

Here it's just laziness/cheapness.
