July 7 will mark the one year anniversary of Castlevania's debut on Netflix. The animated series - an adaptation of the popular video game of the same name - was met with critical praise and was renewed for a second season the same day. Fans have been waiting patiently for the sophomore season to arrive on the streaming service (originally expected this summer), and now it appears we'll finally get a date.

Taking to Twitter, Powerhouse Animation promised to celebrate Castlevania's anniversary with a "BIG announcement" coming later this week.

While July 7 marks the one year anniversary, it's quite possible the big announcement will come on July 5. That's when Netflix is hosting its panel at Anime Expo, promising a first look at season two of Castlevania. What better way to celebrate and cap off the panel than with a premiere date for the eagerly awaited second season?

The good news is that when Castlevania does return, its second season will consist of eight episodes - double the length of the first season. Additionally, writer Warren Ellis teased "many surprises" for the second season which he suggested will shift from the source material and embrace the advantage of Netflix. Exactly what that means remains to be seen, but we'll hopefully find out soon enough when we get our first look at the new season next week at Anime Expo.

“Shift from the source material”....... but why?

Strange, the source material is the only reason I'm interested in this show.

Maybe they’ll actually make a full season this time instead of 3 boring episodes and 1 good episode.

The look of the show is great. The animation is top-notch. Yet the series felt dull. I was a fan of the Super Nintendo game. Having said that, I hope the 2nd season improves the plot; hoping it doesn't divert that much from the source material.
