After a series of delays and a few mishaps, Netflix has set a November 19 premiere date for its highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, and released a batch of official stills which provide a first look at the show's leads.

The images feature John Cho (Spike Spiegel), Mustafa Shakir (Jet Black), and Daniella Pineda (Faye Valentine), and, of course, an adorable corgi as the crew's canine companion, Ein. They certainly look the part, but whether the show manages to appease the anime's devoted fanbase remains to be seen.

Cowboy Bebop is based on the incredibly popular '90s anime by Shinichirō Watanabe, and follows a group of intergalactic bounty hunters aboard their spaceship, Bebop.

"Cowboy Bebop is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka cowboys, all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them."

We recently learned that anime composer Yoka Kano, who has worked on the likes of Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, Turn A Gundam, Macross Plus, and more, will be creating the soundtrack.

Cowboy Bebop will be exec produced and written by Christopher Yost (Thor), who will also serve as showrunner along with Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio; Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios; Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc. Watanabe is on board as a consultant.

Even with some changes and, well, the fact they're blood and flesh, I can still tell who are they supposed to be.

These photos aren't like "automatically horrible" but it doesn't make me feel like we're getting an "adaptation" of Cowboy Bebop. It makes me feel like we're getting a ripoff.

Its very cosplay but its not bad. Cho looks like you would expect Spike to look if come to life, but there's something empty about it.

@BlackBeltJones - I really hope we don't get inundated with anime adaptations after this.
The last thing I need in my life is an American Netflix Evangelion.

@BlackBeltJones - I get what you're saying, but it might be the nature of anime characters that our memories especially emphasize their body language in motion. I've felt that way about first-look images before, and especially in this case where these characters are just so animated (even if it wasn't a pun).

I think that's why Cho's Spike feels strongest, because Spike's stillness is so much more authentic to his character. I find it hard to imagine Faye being very still at all (except when she's practically catatonic with depression). It's hard to be lively in a photoshoot.

@Spock0Clock - I worry about that too. The way these characters move and emote, even taking into account that is obviously animated, has this hyper realistic feel to it.

The show’s hand-drawn action scenes, which are some of the most detailed, fluid animated sequences ever created. Recreating this with flesh-and-blood actors will be a challenge. The exaggerated character body types, purposefully designed to look nothing alike, and fluid, hyper-real movement that Bebop is known for is incredible and I have to imagine hard to replicate and/or homage.

@BlackBeltJones - I hadn't thought about it that way, but you're totally right. There's a whole visual language of Cowboy Bebop that probably won't translate to live-action (short of some mad genius director/editor combo). It's possible that this show ends up looking great, with great action and still feeling "cosplay-y" in comparison to the original.

@Spock0Clock - I guess that's the best we can hope for. And of course the writing being as good as the OG.

There' some great stuff about bittersweet, tragic journeys and people struggling to improve themselves. I think the show would be more interesting as a story within the animated canon rather than a straight adaptation.
