After setting the rumor mill into overdrive upon revealing how much he'd love to play the character, Superman actor Henry Cavill was recently cast as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, and now we have our first official look at him in costume.

While Cavill is sporting Geralt's signature grey hair, he is clean-shaven and doesn't appear to have yellow eyes. He's also missing that prominent scar, although he could well pick that up at some point as the show progresses, of course.

Perhaps this is simply a younger version of the character?

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski's series of fantasy novels - which have since spawned a hugely popular video game franchise - focus on monster hunters known as Witchers who develop supernatural abilities at a young age. The main character is Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a solitary Witcher who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.

The 8-episode first season will be written by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Daredevil, The Defenders, Umbrella Academy), who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones) will helm a total of four episodes, while Alex Garcia Lopez (Luke Cage, Fear The Walking Dead) and Charlotte Brändström (Outlander, Counterpart) will direct two installments each.

Tell us, what do you make of our first glimpse of Henry Cavill in The Witcher? Sound off in the usual place.

@Fogs - Maybe because that’s how it is in the books...and the first two games

@Ghostnuzzler98 - Hmm... Didn't know that.

Seems pretty "clean", he needs some blood and dirt to look authentic. But I know that's just a test.

@Fogs - Is he supposed to be covered in dirt and blood when he gets out of the bath to be "authentic"

I swear, Cavill's beard needs an agent of its own. it gets shaved when it shouldn't, it doesn't when it has to.

Is this based more on the books or the games?
