A lot of cynics in these parts for sure, but it does warm my heart to see George Lucas smiling and enjoying himself around Star Wars again.

@MosquitoFarmer -
True that. He created a timeless classic that has now inspired multiple generations of fans and creatives. He changed the effin world! Of course he has his faults like all of us but for him to see the child of his creativity being handed off to worthy successors in Favreau and Filoni must give him great satisfaction.

@MosquitoFarmer - Well, he no longer has to deal with the fallout of ruining all his fans' childhoods.

@MosquitoFarmer - yeah, I don't agree with most of the creative decisions he made after the original trilogy (the constant tweaks, the majority of what happened with the Prequels, etc) but none of that takes away the fact that he started all this. Everything good about Star Wars can be traced back, whether directly or indirectly, to him, and it's awesome to see that even though he's not really involved anymore he still has all that respect and reverence and gets to go on set and see what everyone's up to with his universe and that he still gets a kick out of it all.

If he wants...give Lucas a limited series in the SW Universe.

@Dredd97 - The creator of the whole thing should be denied to work on a Star Wars series? As @Nightwing1015 said, just keep him away from dialogue, especially romantic scenes.

@IronGenesis - Lucas is a great idea guy (even the Prequels, just listen to Dave Filoni explain them and you'd think he was talking about an entirely different movie trilogy because he makes it sound excellent). However, unless he has other creatives to play off of and develop the ideas with, it tends to not work out as well.

A New Hope was the only film he wrote alone and directed in the OT; not only was it heavily structured around Todorov's narrative theory, Propp's character theory, and the structure of most generic fairytales, but by many accounts it was also pretty much saved by the editor (his wife at the time, Marcia Lucas, who won the Academy Award for editing the movie).

The Empire Strikes Back was co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Bracket based on Lucas' story treatment, and the film was directed by Irvin Kershner, while Return of the Jedi was co-written by Lucas and Kasdan and directed by Richard Marquand.

Lucas then returned for the Prequels, wrote and directed them alone, didn't have Marcia Lucas as his editor anymore as they'd divorced over a decade prior, couldn't structure it around the narrative theories he'd previously relied on for A New Hope... Basically he tried to do it all by himself and I think his ambition was too much for him and the result was a Prequel Trilogy that people ragged on. The thing is though, his ideas were decent, I think he just over exerted himself and should've brought in some collaborators to help him refine his concepts.

Dredd97 - 1/20/2021, 10:59 AM
@Urubrodi - Yes. The creator deserves an amount of respect, but he in no way is to thank for it's success. His ideas are great, but his directing and writing is awful. Before it was edited and scored to salvation, ANH was a disaster. He stepped back on Empire which took the franchise to its highest peak, and is still cinematically the best one. He took more control in Jedi, which was worse, and that was a sign of things to come. The prequels, as we know are a dumpster fire and a half. There's some good concepts in there, but he had no funnel and threw everything at the wall to see if it stuck. And it really sucked. Dave and Jon understand Star Wars like the Irvin Kershner did, and have given it the life it deserved after the OT.
So no, giving George a series out of nostalgia isn't the right move

@Dredd97 -
Yea, Lucas is an idea man but not particularly good at execution. He is better off at this point being a mentor and godlike figure who descends from his perch up there in Marin County to bestow his blessings on the work of others. I personally find even the worst of the prequels to me more watchable than anything that has come out since, including Rogue One. Looking forward to seeing what a generation of filmmakers who grew up with Star Wars can do with the property. In Favreau I Trust.

@Dredd97 - I agree in parts with what you said. Without him, there would be no Star Wars, even if you argue that he wasn't heavily involved in Empire Strikes Back (which is still the best one), it is still based on his story and ideas. This is my opinion, but even though the prequels are not the best movies out there, there is still a lot to be liked, much more than the sequels. The overall plot is pretty great, which is thanks to him, even though the execution could have been much better. I much rather live in a world where the prequels exist than the opposite. I do agree that he is not the best at directing, and definitely not a great writer (especially in the dialogue department), but if he has some great idea, he could still do a lot of good stuff given the chance. Maybe he could be the showrunner and come up with the tv show treatment, and leave the directing and script to other people.

I liked how 'The Jedi' was just a 40 minute mini-Kurosawa film.

The hate he got doesn't seem like the same amount disney is getting now, which is good. Say what you want about the prequels, but those were my movies as a kid and sure they weren't perfect, but they're better than what we got with the sequels. We need more George and less Kathy

@bobevanz -
The prequels get a lot of guff but if you take the Anakin/Padme stuff out of the second one it is a fine movie and I quite like the Phantom Menace and find it imminently rewatchable. Not so much Revenge of the Sith though.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 1/20/2021, 7:24 AM
@bobevanz - I think they are actually far worse movies than the sequel but the sequel trilogy was safe and still sucked while at least the prequels were a big swing and a miss while setting up some legitimately good world build and ideas that later creators (The Clone Wars) would come in and do justice.
