VENOM: 5 Things We Need To See In Sony's Upcoming SPIDER-MAN Spinoff

Sony's long delayed Venom recently got a release date, but what does the spinoff need to do in order to succeed and deliver the take on the symbiote fans want? Here are five must-have suggestions!

It's been talked about for years, but with a 2018 release date now set, it appears as if we can finally expect to see Venom become a reality. Little to nothing is known about the movie right now beyond who wrote the latest draft of the screenplay, but it's a project which it's easy to be in equal parts excited and worried about. Simply put, Venom is either going to be awesome or downright awful.

I definitely think it has some potential, though, and here, you will find my thoughts on the five things this spinoff must do in order to both succeed and deliver a story fans of the iconic villain will love.

From certain plot points to characters who must be included and must-haves when it comes to the tone, Venom following the directions below will help ensure that this adaptation is something special and worth the wait after years of it being talked about but with nothing concrete happening...

5. Spider-Man

All the signs are pointing to Venom taking place in its own separate universe, something which sort of makes sense now that Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was able to push producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach out of Spider-Man: Homecoming, it seems like they'll be heavily involved with Venom and you don't need me to tell you why that's cause for concern! With any luck, Sony will realise they need Marvel's input here and if not, this spinoff still needs to feature the wall-crawler in some way.

Personally, I would love to see Peter Parker get the alien costume during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, with him appearing sporadically throughout Venom in order for Eddie Brock's origin story to be told in a satisfying manner. This cameo of sorts leaves the door open to a proper confrontation between the two down the line and would keep fans happy. Unfortunately, I'm not sure Sony realises that, but so long as Spidey is referenced in some way, that's better than Venom being given a whole new origin story where Peter doesn't factor into the story in any way. That just wouldn't be Venom!

Marvel Studios will never release an R-Rated superhero movie, but Sony can. While it's not 100% necessary for Venom to go down this route, it would prove advantageous in a number of ways, particularly if we're getting the "Lethal Protector" version of the character. Seeing him dole out justice in a brutal manner would emphasise what a different beast he is to Spider-Man and Logan proved that the sort of action off limits to a PG-13 release can make a big difference. It also opens the door to Venom being able to do new things from a tonal perspective, but what this movie really needs to avoid is throwing in a bunch of gore and F-Bombs purely for the sake of it.

Now, you may think me talking about an R-Rated movie which needs a Spider-Man cameo is something of a contradiction given that hero's popularity with youngsters, but it was only a few years ago that the likes of Wolverine and Colossus showing up in anything other than a family friendly summer blockbuster was unfathomable. The game has changed and regardless of your feelings on Venom becoming a reality, there's no denying that it has the potential to exceed expectations with an all-important R.

3. Eddie Brock

A lot of different people have worn the Venom symbiote over the years and that leaves Sony with quite a lot of different options. On the one hand, Flash Thompson would be an interesting choice; the studio could cut Spider-Man out by making the alien costume something the government has captured and is giving to the wounded soldier, while his constant struggle to control it as he uses it in battle to create all manner of militarised weapons would definitely make for compelling viewing. Alas, there are a number of reasons that wouldn't be entirely satisfying, with the lack of Spidey and the fact we'd have another Flash on the big screen following his appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming among a couple of the biggest.

That's why I think the best option is to stick with Eddie Brock. His "Lethal Protector" gimmick could work really well, especially with the action moved to San Francisco, while his religious fanaticism and hatred of Peter Parker could be every bit as fun to watch here as it was in the comic books. When it comes to Venom, Eddie is the real deal and I just hope Sony delivers the classic version rather this his nerdy and weedy Ultimate Universe counterpart.

2. The Classic Costume

I've talked a lot here about what Sony should and shouldn't do in terms of characters and certain story elements, but if there's one thing I really want to see in Venom, it's the classic costume. What do I mean by that? Well, going back to the character's debut, I'd like to see Venom start off without the huge fangs and tongue, with those evolving the longer Eddie wears the costume. That would reflect the influence the symbiote is having on him and just how monstrous he's becoming and a is a nice way to pay homage to the source material.

For me, Spider-Man 3 was a let down in regards to how the costume itself was portrayed (essentially just a black version of Spidey's suit), so it would be great for this movie to go for the traditional smooth, black look and the massive white logo on his chest. Venom's costume is a simple one, so surely even Sony can't drop the ball here and with a blueish tinge, I think this could end up being one of the most comic book faithful and coolest looking outfits we've seen on the big screen in quite some time. In terms of size, I'd like to think he'll be bigger than Topher Grace's version, but not the man eating giant seen in some recent comics!

1. Carnage

Regardless of whether Spider-Man has a small role here or doesn't appear at all, common sense says he won't be the lead "villain" of a Venom movie. The Life Foundation would be one interesting option, especially if it means Eddie Brock is forced to become a hero in order to take down the man made symbiotes that end up wreaking havoc in wherever it is he calls home. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that's a concept better saved for somewhere down the line, especially as it may be a tad gimmicky for this movie to revolve around Venom battling a bunch of disposable alien baddies.

Introducing Carnage here would be a much better option, particularly if things head down an R-Rated route. Not only would this psychopath add some horror elements to Venom, but his inclusion could lead to this being a psychological thriller along the lines of Se7en as Brock finds himself trying to take the villain down as he uses his symbiote to go on a horrifying killing spree. This may be wishful thinking on my part, but an introduction for Carnage in Venom could even lead to a "Maximum Carnage" adaptation somewhere down the line, something it would be amazing to see on the big screen!

I don't get it, how can this be a thing without being introduced via Spidey. Is this going to be a stand alone and be his own thing and nothing to do with Spiderman? I'm just confused why this is happening lol.

and before anyone says for $$$, they aren't doing a good job when they have something so big to Spiderman lore, and not even involve him. At least for now until we get more info.

@jaysin420 - I could believe they could go that route. I've been seeing a lot of Spider-Woman merch lately just like Harley Quinn merch as Suicide Squad was in the early stages of talks and production. It'd also be a way to introduce Spider-Woman for a movie of her own.

it's gonna end up being PG13 flick with no Eddie Brock and no connection to MCU. So no Spiderman. Also no Flash Thompon, still they can take another character and give him Flash story arc. whatever it is. did not read. also if the movie will do right at the box office they gonna give you a sequel and Carnage. of course it will still be PG13.
