The Five Nights At Freddy's movie was announced all the way back in 2015 when Warner Bros.-owned New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the hugely popular indie game series. After losing its footing for awhile, it seems that there has been significant progress on the movie, with the project now having secured a director and a new production company.

Hopefully, this means that fans will not have to wait much longer for the film to hit the big screen.

The movie will be directed by Chris Columbus, the well known filmmaker behind many hits such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Home Alone, and Mrs. Doubtfire. Columbus also wrote Gremlins and helped produce Night at the Museum 2.

Blumhouse Productions, the company behind Get Out and The Purge, is now in charge of the movie having acquired the rights from New Line Cinema last year. Blumhouse’s founder and CEO Jason Blum will co-produce the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie alongside Columbus and the game’s developer Scott Cawthon.

Check out the official tweet welcoming Columbus to the staff down below:

Gil Kenan, who was initially attached as director when the project was with New Line Cinema, is now listed as a scriptwriter on IMDB. However, it’s unclear if Kenan is still part of the project now that Blumhouse is in charge.

What are your thoughts on the news? Are you patiently waiting for the Five Nights At Freddy's movie? Do you think this will be a success unlike most video game adaptations? Let us know in the comments below and as always, stay tuned for more news!

Ok... Let's wait but I am afraid this will "horror" movie full of jumpscare and nothing more. And Chris Colombus is not really a great director so...

@Oskir - I mean, that's all the games really are anyway. If I were to guess, they're really gonna build a larger world around them. Maybe go the Goosebumps route or something. I feel like this'll be more family based than teen/adult.

@JoeInTheBox - Yeah that's why I don't know what they can really do besides jumpscare. But if this movie has a lot of creepy tension why not? But with Colombus as a director? I don't see them go this way, I will be more interested with an Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, Alexandre Aja or James Watkins

@Oskir - Yeah, I wouoldn't even mind if they went campy but creative, like The Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I just see this as the studio wanting to make a family friendly franchise for Halloween.

@JoeInTheBox - It has to be a creepy Family movie like Gremlins, Killer Clowns from Outerspace, Beetlejuice, and Adams family.

This franchise caters to kids. Granted it has some subliminal mature undertones like people being crushed into animatronics and their corpses rotting inside them. But there are ways to go that route without the over the top gore.

Kids love this franchise and it sells a lot of toys and collectibles. Don't make this a hard R and kill your only fans.....kids.

@SonOfAGif - Yeah, to be fair, I'm all for it. Less interesting to me, but I totally want this generation of kids to have the kinds of movies we used to get in the 80's(Gremlins, Goonies, Critters, etc.).

Not everything has to cater to adults. I hear the new Jumanji is good, I'll check that out eventually as well.

@SonOfAGif - Who gives a shit about kids? This has the potential to be a terrifying movie. It needs to be PG 13

@PeterSparker - When you move out of your parents house, find a wife one day, and have kids of your own "YOU" will give a shit about kids. Until then stay the f**k out of a convo that doesn't pertain to you sociopath.

Colombus’ career really fizzled out after Harry Potter. I think he did Rent (strange choice), then Percy Jackson (which felt like a Harry Potter clone), and then some really terrible teeny bopper movie (Beth Cooper). The guy needs a hit.

So, the puppets are gonna lose in the end I take it.

I've always heard about this game over the years but can anyone explain the premise to me?
JoeInTheBox
JoeInTheBox - 2/14/2018, 9:25 AM
@smgmayhem - Essentially you're a security guard, after hours at a Chuck-E_Cheese type restaurant in the 80's. Over the course of 5 nights, you monitor the closed establishment, and notice that the animatronic animal characters are slowly roaming the place and want to kill you.

That's really all there is to it. There is lore about why and how this phenomena is happening, but it's largely a jump scare, first person, found footage type survival horror game. Plenty of room to flesh out the universe in a movie. Could be a decent family movie, with mild scares like Goosebumps or something more sinister and graphic, if they want to go that route also.

@JoeInTheBox - Thanks, sounds pretty interesting. I will have to check it out someday.

@smgmayhem - Careful going down that rabbit hole! There is TONS of back story, lore, and mystery to this franchise.

At face falue its just a mildly creepy game about animatronic animals coming to life.

But the backstory for WHY those animatronics come to life is reeeeeeally dark and messed up.

Not only that, but there are countless videos on Youtube of people trying to figure out certain things from the game.

Its a cool franchise if you take the time to read up on it.

Can Columbus direct a horror movie?

I'm excited! Real-life animatronics, the creator working closely to it, Blumhouse being behind it, & the director of my favorite Harry Potter movies & Home Alone

Say what you want about the games, but this movie has potential to be something unique & special

I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan of the FNAF franchise but I am extremely jealous of it. I was a 90s kid who loved Chuckie Cheese do creating a horror game with that environment is downright genius IMO. I wish I thought of a horror game or film using a Chuckie Cheese backstory

Honestly I think the FNAF franchise would be better as films than games. As games, they are boring & repetitive. The thing someone like me likes is the lore behind the franchise. You can’t make the film be 5 nights surviving as a night guard because it’s dumb. The reason it works in the game is the games themselves make light on how ridiculous & dumb it is.

Overall I am somewhat excited. I hope they go more horror and less kid friendly with the film. I kind of hate how cute and kid friendly this franchise has become & blame the furry crowd for that lol

Still imagine being Scott. Years ago he was about to quit making games & the game that was his final shot launched his own game franchise, countless toys & products based on the game, & a movie deal.

My son is going to FLIP! He loves FNAF. I didn't even know they were trying to bring this to mainstream theaters...

I can'thelp but laugh at the "jump scares" Not gonna lie, it got me ONE time. Just once.

Given how boring the games are this might be the actual first video game movie that's actually good.

While I'm normally no fan of Found Fototage Films, that style would be perfect for a FNAF movie. It would simulate the games quite well. Let's See what Columbus will do with it.
