Marvel's Spider-Man is officially the best-selling superhero game in the United States, surpassing Batman: Arkham City. The achievement comes by way of marketing research company NPD Group, which tracks the sales of video games (among other consumer purchases) in the United States.
With San Diego Comic-Con in full swing NPD Group's U.S. video games analyst Mat Piscatella shared the lifetime sales leaders for superhero video games. Marvel's Spider-Man, which released in September 2018, tops the list. It's followed by Rocksteady Studios' Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight. The Caped Crusader also holds the No. 4 spot with LEGO Batman, followed by LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, which rounds out the top five.
What makes this achievement even more impressive is the fact that Marvel's Spider-Man is available only on one console, the PlayStation 4, while Batman: Arkham City has been released for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One.
It should be noted, however, that this is only taking into account video game sales in the United States and ranked according to "dollar sales," not actual copies sold. As NPD Group does not track global sales, it's unclear if Marvel's Spider-Man is also the best-selling superhero game worldwide.
Marvel's Spider-Man was developed by Insomniac Games who have yet to announce if there will be a sequel to the game.
Meanwhile, Rocksteady Studios is working on a secret game which they have yet to formally announce. Studio co-founder Sefton Hill did at least confirm that the new project is not a Superman game.
