Several sites have shared breakdowns of their 2019 visits to the Australian set of Mortal Kombat, and along with some intriguing new details about the R-rated video game reboot, we have a batch of new behind-the-scenes photos featuring several fan-favourite fighters.

In addition, executive producer E. Bennet Walsh addressed one aspect of the ultra-violent video games fans have arguably been most curious about: the Fatalities.

The recent trailer confirmed that we will definitely be seeing some visceral and bloody action, but fans of the game's more elaborate or sadistically brutal finishers might be disappointed by what the movie is allowed to depict.

“The problem with the fatalities, in general, is that MPAA is very different from the ESRB," Walks tells JoBlo. "In the game, they’re all CGI characters. They’re not real. This allows the game makers to raise the bar of the violence, right? I’m under the restrictions of the Motion Picture Association of America. I have to live inside those rules. We’re going to do as much as we can, I can promise you that.”

This sounds fine. After all, we don't need to see someone's skeleton ripped out through their mouth... right?

Check out the stills (via Discussing Film) below along with the trailer, and let us know what you think. You can also take a look at the recent motion character posters HERE.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max this April 12.

If PG Poltergeist got away with a dude ripping his own face off in the '80s I feel like having people explode and decapitated in a 2020+1 R movie shouldn't be much of a hassle.

@Reeds2Much - That was also a Spielberg production and his influence almost makes other MPAA decisions moot(see also Jaws and Temple of Doom with the heart rip). Plus PG-13 was a mid-80's invention.

Not to mention how much of a hatchet job the MPAA has on horror. In the 90's horror was cut to ribbons(look at how tame Scream is compared to a typical episode of The Walking Dead). They could shoot for going as gory as possible, but they will most likely get denied an R rating.

In my honest opinion, those Sub-Zero and Scorpion costumes suck. Sub just looks like he's wearing black.

@Kumkani - it looks as though there is some sub dye going on with the outfits. It seems like the colors of the characters stand out more when they are in light. But when they are in the dark, that is when everything looks black.

@Kumkani - I definitely thought that was Rain at first, and got really excited

@Kumkani - i think with sub zero, they're kind of combining the older sub zero and noob saibot versions of the main character. i predict cole young will be the younger sub zero.

No chance everybody was gonna be satisfied with the costumes.

This one has risen towards the top of my most anticipated the next few months. TBH, I think I want to see this more than Black Widow at this point.

The film looks really cool, I've become a fan of the franchise thanks to the cheesy but great first film and then moved onto the games. There's so much cinematic story there they could fill an entire movie franchise with gory glory, so I really hope this is good and can materialize a proper MK film series.

As for the gore, I get that the MPAA is a pain in the anus but this franchise is built on shattered bone. So I really hope we get some proper gore. What the MPAA is still pretty bad in is separating exaggerated violence from realistic violence. For example I get why they had issues with the original Martyrs but in MK the violence is clearly cartoonish and not meant to leave a lasting psychological effect on the viewer.

Hope we get some hilarious and gratuitous violence to drive the point home how ridiculous that franchise is

I despise what they have done to Sub-Zero. All I see is Noob Saibot in each photo. They should have just went with Noob-Saibot and make Cole his brother Kuai Liang who changed his identity and is hiding out on Earthrealm and Quan-chi sends Noob to hunt him down to destroy the Lin Quai.

@SonOfAGif - i think that's exactly the gist of what's happening. the older sub zero will already more or less also be noob. cole will be quai lang. and if that's the case, i appreciate them making bi han a sub zero/noob hybrid, so that kuai lang can become sub zero as the lead in sequels and have a distinctly different costume. i don't think having both sub zeros have blue costumes in the movies would work. i dig noob sub zero

Still holding out hope that "Cole Young" is "Shao Khan" reincarnated, or as some sort of vessel for the Outworld ruler to return from his absence.

His outfit and body mods (completely convinced it's biological, and not a suit) during his fight with Goro heavily reassemble the fighter in the painting shown during the trailer - which seems to be a prophecy.

But the more I look at that painting, the more I see Shao Khan without his armor. The spiked gauntlets, and the discoloration around his eyes & nose somewhat resemble the appearance of whatever species SK is supposed to be.

There's more to Cole Young than any of us think and that "birth mark" is much more than an invitation.

The facemasks on Scorpion and Sub-Zero are 1990 Shredder-level stupid looking.

i love everyone whining about the costumes from still pictures. fanboys can never be satisfied. reminds me of ten ish years ago when everyone was b!tching and whining about Chris Evans' Captain America suit in still pictures. and it ended up looking great on screen.

Liu Kang shouldn’t have a shirt. It sucks!

They may have gone too hard on the ninja outfits. I genuinely love the overall designs, but they’re a bit over-designed. Sub-Zero really lacks color in what’s very likely a nod to Noob, which is a fair choice, but I don’t like it. The games have been toning down the colors since MKX & over-designing the costumes, so at least the movie is being loyal to the games. I want Kuai Liang to get the shredder outfit eventually if the series runs long, I love it so much.
