TOMB RAIDER Star Alicia Vikander Provides Update On Sequel, Possibly Hinting At Uncertainty

Tomb Raider 2 has been in development for a while now, but recent comments from star Alicia Vikander could point to the film's fate being up in the air. Find out what she had to say here...

Alicia Vikander debuted as Lara Croft in 2018's Tomb Raider. The film set up a storyline for a continuation, but the road toward a sequel has been a bit rocky. Back in 2019, it was announced that Tomb Raider 2 would be hitting theaters in March 2021 and be helmed by Ben Wheatley (High-Rise). The film was ultimately delayed indefinitely and soon after that, Wheatley dropped out as director. Lovecraft Country's Misha Green was then brought in to replace him.

Things started looking promising for the sequel after that, with Green revealing the project had been tentatively titled Tomb Raider: Obsidian. However, a new interview with Alicia Vikander may point to Tomb Raider 2's fate being a little uncertain.

The actress recently sat down for an interview with Total Film, in which she discussed the film and gushed about director Misha Green:

"When the studio first said they were interested in a sequel, I got really excited. When Misha was mentioned to me and I saw the work on Lovecraft Country, I was extremely impressed," said the actress, who then talked about having a good time during her Zoom meetings with Green before dropping what could be considered not-so-good news for the sequel:

"It's so much fun on the Zooms I’ve had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age. I get to talk about big action set pieces and stunts that we want to make. I’m hoping that we get on track and get to do something together."

The "get to do something together" part could point to the film's fate being up in the air. That's especially plausible given how, this July, Vikander revealed during an interview with Collider that the movie had not been officially greenlit:

"Pre-COVID, I would've said 'yes.' And now I think it’s a 'yes' still. It's not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited, and I would love to revisit Lara again."

This statement, paired with Vikander's continued cautiousness and the movie's lengthy delay, could point to the possibility of Tomb Raider 2 ultimately not happening.

Of course, this is just speculation on our part at this point, so Tomb Raider fans need not to panic yet. We simply need to wait and see how things develop over the coming months. Vikander delivered an outstanding performance as Croft, so it would be exciting to see her back in the role.
