Nearly three years after it was first reported to be in the works, Ubisoft's movie adaptation of its popular video game Tom Clancy's The Division finally has a home. Announced on stage at E3 today, The Division movie will be released on Netflix.

No release date was announced, but we did get confirmation that both Jake Gyllenhall and Jessica Chastain will star in (and produce) the film with David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw) in the director's chair. Rafe Judkins is adapting the screenplay based on the video game of the same name.

The synopsis reads:

In the near future, a pandemic virus is spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the city of New York and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.

Released in 2016, Tom Clancy's The Division became the fastest-selling new IP in video game history. A sequel, The Division 2, launched in March of this year, taking the action from New York City to Washington D.C., where players are tasked with restoring order after the pandemic.

Here's the original trailr from The Division's launch in 2016.

Not too familiar with The Division, but with this cast and director I’ll defitieky check it out on Netflix. This feels like it may have flopped theatrically but could be huge for Netflix

This movie has been in "development hell" for years. It's good to see it finally getting some backing and a release.

IIRC, Tom Hardy was originally cast as the lead.

It was a fun game, but it got very repetitive very fast. I haven't had a chance to play the new one that came out back in March, but I've heard good things.

@L0RDbuckethead - Stephan Gaghan was meant to direct this a while back, maybe that's why Hardy was attached?

@L0RDbuckethead - Tom Hardy was only involved with splinter cell not the division.

@PantherKing - Ah yes, thank you, you're right. I was mixing those two up. Splinter Cell was the OG though. I loved playing through the campaign(s) on all the various difficulties on original Xbox

I wonder if (or when) that Splinter Cell movie will be released, and if Hardy is even still apart of it?

Should be another five minutes before the Mysterio vs Vuk images start appearing.
