WONDER WOMAN 3 Officially Announced With Patty Jenkins & Gal Gadot Set To Return

Well, that didn't take long. Just two days after WW84's debut, Warner Bros. has officially announced plans to fast-track a threequel with both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot set to return.

After scoring the best opening weekend to date in the coronavirus era with an estimated $16.7 million three-day total, Warner Bros. has officially announced that both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot will return to wrap up Diana Prince's trilogy in Wonder Woman 3, which will open theatrically.

Jenkins will also pen the screenplay, but it's unclear whether she'll begin production on the threequel before the previously announced Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which is due out in theaters December 2023. Either way, it seems as though the studio was keen on getting Diana Prince back on the big screen as soon as possible, which may or may not be a good thing considering the decidedly mixed reactions her latest outing has been receiving.

No release date has been set just yet, but with Jenkins and Gadot also expected to reteam on Cleopatra, which is rumored to begin production sometime next year, it seems probable that Wonder Woman 3 won't arrive until 2024/2025, at the earliest, barring any unforeseen developments.

In a statement, Warner Bro. chief Toby Emmerich said, “As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.

Despite the increasingly negative public response, Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer, expressed excitement after the film seemingly hit a number of subscriber benchmarks for the struggling HBO Max. “ ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend. During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.
