I enjoyed Dark Phoenix a lot, but I don't understand why Kinberg used Rachel's phoenix saga instead of Jean's. Or why he used Vuk and the D'Bari instead of Deathbird and the Shi'ar. Lots of really dumb decisions that marred a pretty good script and a well-acted film. People watch these for something familiar, so leave the obscure stuff in comic limbo.

Rumor ....

@Cuhcoast - There is absolutely no evidence to suggest Marvel is considering hiring a minority or black actor for Magneto. The only 'evidence' of such is a quote from several months ago with Feige saying more diversity is coming to the MCU after Black Panther. The original website that first posted this is simply inferring that therefore Marvel will racebend the character. In other words, they're making a guess that Marvel may consider it. And in even simpler words, there's no evidence.

So can we stop losing our collective minds over this nonexistent shit?

Bless the guy, doing his best to both distance himself from the movies and sound supportive of them in the same interview.

@Reeds2Much

It is possible to enjoy movies from a franchise and dislike others.

Some X-Men movies were very good.
I know this site hates to admit it but they were.

@regularmovieguy - Some X-Men movies were very good.

Not the two movies/storylines Claremont mentions, which he is both trying to distance himself from and sound supportive of. To be fair to you though, that was one of the better strawmen to be used on this site.

They could easily still do the Phoenix story since Fox never really used so many of the it’s defining characteristics and since it’s the kind of story Marvel Studios wouldn’t touch until 10 years after they introduce the characters (so maybe like 15 years from now). But at that point the way to go is a two-part movie like Infinity War/Endgame with Phoenix saving the universe and then the Dark Phoenix sage complete with Hellfire Club and the Shi’ar Empire.

I wonder how much money Claremont got for Dark Phoenix. For instance, the guy who created Diablo in Suicide Squad got a paycheck so big he was able to buy a house.

George Perez recently noted that DC sent him a six figure check as royalties from the Wonder Woman movie. So, I wonder what guys like Claremont and Dini & Timm are getting for characters they shaped that are making it to the big screen.

I would say just let the MCU do it, but considering it's been done twice now they probably won't ever. And that's a shame.

That may be the answer to X-Men in general, a Disney+ Series instead of movies. X-Men is such an all encompassing, sweeping tale, particularly the slow burn needed for the entirety of the Phoenix saga, that a serialized multi-part epic is perhaps the only way to truly do justice to the characters and their interactions and the way Wyngarde corrupts jean and lets loose the Phoenix. And a character or group of characters could occasionally lend a hand in a big event film. Make it so Marvel, make it so...

@pclark - Or both. The X-Men are the perfect franchise & characters to explore & develop over both streaming / TV & movies. Use every resource posisble to tell & adapt their stories & give you time to bond with the characters.

I agree with this 100%. The Xmen series is a long intertwined story about the everyday lives of specific mutants. The only way to do correctly w/ some justice is a series. I'd watch it.

I can't see Marvel playing storylines out across Film and TV in such a major way. Spin-offs, sure, but Dark Phoenix would be more like a sequel.

If anything though, baring in mind the scope of the story, its importance, and Claremont's observation that perhaps it needs more staggered storytelling if and when it's adapted again - maybe Marvel should consider adapting it into a pair or even trilogy of films once their X-Men series is established and already has a few installments under its belt.

The great thing about the X-Men property is that there's such a large cast of potential characters that it has enormous longevity built into it, meaning multiple installments could be released with a revolving cast. In that way, it could almost be its own mini universe within the MCU with its own crossovers and events.

So when they've done the First Class and the sequel and introduced the new team like Storm and Nightcrawler, when they've reintroduced Wolverine, and they've got some history behind them and some more distance from Fox's version, then they can start tackling the bigger stories that have already been adapted - like a different take on the Dark Phoenix Saga Past played across a couple of films. They could take the same approach with new adaptations of things like Days of Future Past too.

In fairness, I actually hoped that if and when Marvel eventually regained the rights they'd make X-Men into a big budget TV show (Game of Thrones style) because there's so much they can do with it, and I even kind of had ideas about how each season would introduce new characters and what storylines they'd tackle, but I can't imagine Disney relegating the property to the small screen when it's such a lucrative cinematic property, especially with some of their A-Listers being retired and the loss of Spidey.

Ithink it should be done more like IT but 3 parts. First as children or teens in this case with Bobby the youngest at 16 and whoever is oldest not older than 20 (Warren) with a 30ish Prof X. Transforation part 1, happens as children then save world part 2 Dark phoenix part 3 happen as adults.

The snap can be the event that brings about the mutant scare. Not to say there no mutants before it occurred but they were just in very small numbers. The radiation released due to the snap activated a lot dormant mutants. They still havent really dealt with the consequences of the snap or what happen during those 5 years. A rise in the mutant population could be one of them.

Just saw this movie as I assumed it would suck. It's not too bad! Way better than Apocalypse and some others as well imo. Also WAY better than The Last Stand! I guess I'm not getting all of the hate?
