DARK PHOENIX Concept Art Reveals The Movie's Original Ending And Offers A First Look At The Skrulls

It's no secret that Dark Phoenix underwent some extensive reshoots and that the entire final act was changed. Star Tye Sheridan (Scott Summers/Cyclops) has previously revealed that the original version of the movie would have seen Jean Grey head into outer space to battle an entire fleet of Skrulls while the heroes attempted to protect the United Nations back on Earth.

Now, some concept art has been revealed which sheds some light on how that final battle in outer space was originally going to play out. It certainly looks a lot more epic than what we ended up getting, but the similarities to Captain Marvel are clear to see, so it's no wonder Fox scrapped it.

It's worth noting that these scenes were shot, but it doesn't sound like they'll be on the Blu-ray! As a result, this artwork is probably the closest we'll get to seeing how Dark Phoenix was originally going to play out before those reshoots.

Jean getting torn apart by the alien swarm

According to artist Houston Sharp, this scene is meant to show Jean Grey being "torn apart" by an alien swarm. However, it's hard to imagine that this is the way the character was going to die here.

Remember how Captain Marvel blasted through those Kree ships in outer space? Well, that was the plan here too, as this "swarm" of ships surrounds Jean seconds before she destroys them all.

Dark Phoenix ended with a shot of the Phoenix Force in its classic form, but this piece of concept art reveals what was meant to be the character's "final form," and it's a lot more impressive.

Jean Grey powers up and blasts into space, but there's no denying that she looks an awful lot like Captain Marvel in her Binary form! Once again, that explains why some changes were made here.

This shot of Jean in space is presumably from the movie's opening sequence after the X-Men save those astronauts. Either way, this is a great piece of imagery that was mostly recreated quite well on screen.

Here, we see Cyclops and Storm facing off with a mutant villain called "Medusa Man." Fox's X-Men franchise frequently created random mutants like this rather than using established characters from the comics.

There's nothing to say that the Skrulls would have ended up looking exactly like this, but this is a very cool design and it's easy enough to imagine how they would have been able to change their appearance.

1. I feel like a small book could be written about Fox's weird obsession with creating mutants for absolutely no reason when there are such cooler ones just sitting there in the comics with their own distinct visual presentation and personality

@OmegaDaGrodd - It started with Singer telling cast and crew that X-Men comics were banned on set, all the way back in 1999. I was an extra on that 2000 X-men movie filming in Toronto (I was basically cast because I had a band outfit, and they needed a band in the Liberty island scene). Anyways, sat there for 7 hrs as they set up, and all the people milling about were saying the same thing. X-Men was not to look or feel like X-Men comics.
